West Park is a small, rural community in Polk County, Florida. It was established in 1884 by early west Floridians who wanted to create a new town on their land east of the Hillsborough River. The original name for West Park was "Eldon". The post office was called "Park" from 1903 until 1935. The first settler in West Park was George Latham. He and his family moved to the area in 1884 from Spring Hill, Florida. In 1888, Hargrave & Macdonald built a farmstead on what is now the corner of Oakland and Elm Streets. This settlement functioned as a local stopgap while development occurred further south along the Hillsborough River. By 1889, two other families had relocated to West Park: the Howes and the Smiths. Between 1890 and 1899, several more settlers arrived including John Fenton who bought 600 acres (2 km2) of land at present-day Archer Road and Old State Road#1 (now State Road 695). In 1902, Wagon Wheel Creamery opened its doors in West Park with forty-eight bushel baskets of creamed corn being sold per wagonload! Today, this iconic business still operates out of its original building at 62nd Street and Archer Road within sight of Interstate 75/I-4 Exit 177B! That same year saw also when First National Bank completed construction on what is nowState Road 655 just north of downtown West Park; it would be their second location in this small town. Their first store would open at 301 N Sumter Avenue which currently houses Alliant Energy Corporation’s corporate headquarters! By 1906 - 1908 there were only four homes remain inWest Park total with sixty residents living there; it appears that most residents here enjoyed retirement or travel opportunities instead of moving into this developing community! Only one inhabitant - Mrs Clements - actually started working outside her home during these years as she took care of all aspects Of rannning the grocery store etc.; groundwork for later businesses such as Barnes & Noble bookstore opened up soon after though! One resident did manage to start a school which he named "Homeschooling Institute" which became an Academy for Girls located adjacent to today's Patton Elementary School #1010 E Walton Blvd., opened November 1969
West Park is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It was founded on December 3, 1924 by Dr. J.C. West and his wife Mrs. Lillian Gifford West, as part of the University of Miami's expansion into what would become South Florida. The city was incorporated on February 5, 1925. In the 1920s, Dr. J.C.'s father had been an engineer with the US Army Signal Corps and he developed a system to send signals over long distances without being overheard by other stations or enemies and this led to the development of West Park Boulevard which runs through the heart of town The first plant in what would become West Park was built in 1923 by American Electric Power Company (AEP) for production of electric lights for homes and businesses in Wynwood neighborhood adjacent to campus at Northwest 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue (now MLK Boulevard).
