West Park, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Hollywood Combined Statistical Area. West Park began as a small farming community on the extreme eastern edge of what is now Monroe County. A post office was established in 1881, and by 1890 it had reached its present size. One of the first settlers in West Park was Abram Withers, who arrived from Kentucky with his family in 1876. Withers and his wife constructed a log cabin on their farmstead which still stands today. They also raised chickens and pigs and grew maize, potatoes, onions, carrots, peas and beans for their own consumption. Today most of what remains on Abram's farmstead can be seen along Umatilla Road south of Interstate 441 just east of mile marker 33 (the modern day boundary between Polk County to the north and Monroe County to the south). In 1908 local developer Halsey Gable donated land to build what would become known as "Gable Country". After years of planning and construction work by many residents and businesses alike, Gable's parkland opened up to public use on November 1st 1915 when he dedicated it in memory of his late father-in-law Commodore Keyes Ballinger II (1863–1949), founder and first president of Miami University (later Miami University–Oxford). The park served as an important recreational area for locals during World War I; afterFlorida statehood it became one of two national parks operated by US National Park Service within George Washington National Forest boundaries; however closed permanently due to budget cuts in 2006 . The original name for West Park was Pinecrest because much of its development took place near Clearwater Beach which then reigned as America's favorite summer destination for wealthy Atlantans looking for escape from city life during that time period . However during WWI Pinecrest was renamed West Park after Captain Samuel Moulton Marbury who helped rally support against American entry into WWI

The name "West Park" was given to the community by settlers who were forced out of their homes in what is now Osceola County by the Seminole Indians in 1836. The town site was surveyed and platted on October 14, 1876 by J.B. Grimes under the name of "Mint Hill". The post office was established at West Park on December 9, 1876 and became part of Citrus County on January 3, 1907. In 1927, construction began on a shopping center called "Eve's", which would become one of Central Florida's major malls. The original Eve's mall opened in November 1929 and included such stores as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney among its tenants; it closed in 1990 after several years of neglect by Citrus County leaders. In 1987, developer Ivey Shopping Centers purchased Eve's from retailer Sears for $130 million; Ivey converted it into an upscale department store known as "The Mall". In 2003, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown West Park and caused extensive damage to both the shopping center and Eve's mall; although both structures remain open today as retail/entertainment venues. A new complex called Regency Town Center was built nearby that includes a Target Store and multiple restaurants including Olive Garden Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria (now defunct) as well as a Winn-Dixie grocery storeanchor; development plans call for more than 100 businesses to be located within its boundaries when complete. A new park has been created adjacent to Regency Town Center: Westpark Plaza which opened in 2006 with three levels including an outdoor amphitheater capable seating up to 6,000 people annually for events such as concerts or Renaissance Fairs; it also contains housing units completed throughout 2007 through Spring 2008.
