The ship was built by James K. Polk and arrived in West Melbourne under his command on October 25, 1812. From its inception until World War II, the navy played an important role in naval warfare throughout South America and the Caribbean Sea. In 1912, the first destroyer squadron was organized in West Melbourne and it served with distinction during World War I. In 1939, Admiral Jesse Biddle ordered the construction of two new battleships – Oklahoma and Nevada – at Pier 26 in Miami Beach. These ships were joined by four more destroyers later that year becoming known as “Navy Group 2”. By 1887, it had grown to include a post office and two stores. The first store owner was Wm Halsey. The town was renamed after John Wesley Manchester (1841-1924), who donated land for it in 1902 and built a home there in 1904. West Melbourne, Florida is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa Bay metropolitan area. West Melbourne was first settled by British colonists in 1794 as part of what is now Hillsborough County. In 1836, it became part of Union County and was renamed after Melbourne, England. The city's current name was given to it by Congressman George Morrison in 1898 when he lobbied for its incorporation into Hillsborough County. After years of growth and development within the city limits over the years, West Melbourne annexed neighboring unincorporated communities on May 8th, 1972. On November 2nd of that year a resolution was passed to annex Asbury Park and Sunrise Beach which made them both cities with their own government and police departments under one banner for the first time in history. Asbury Park includes portions of Sunrise Beach which are still rural unincorporated areas today despite annexation by West Melbourne proper; however both cities have had high-profile civic events taking place there such as the 1984 running of the Miami Marathon (now known as the 'Great Miami Race') or large school fairs hosted by each city every year since 1982 - all without ever formally joining together until annexation happened!

In 1898, the East Indian Missionary Society moved to West Melbourne from Pembroke Pines and started providing educational opportunities for local children. In 1915, Indian Scout leader Cephus Randwick delivered an address at First Baptist Church challenging white settlers to convert to Islam so that all people could live happily together under one roof. The 1920s were difficult for West Melbourne as it experienced heavy Fascist deportation policies from Italy which led to social unrest and a decline in population. However, during the 1930s things changed when Mayor James Hogg created the city's first zoning ordinance which allowed for more commercial development within limits set by developers. This led to increased business activity along with new housing developments such as the Waterford Towers which became popular among middle-class families during this time period. In 1978, four years after Florida's secession from the United States, West Melbourne experienced its own economic boom as businesses began moving into town because of low taxes and great infrastructure projects such as Interstate 495 which connected South Lakeland with Broward County and Orlando respectively
