Vero Beach, Florida is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Miami metropolitan area. The name of Vero Beach comes from the Indian word "vera." The beachfront community was founded on December 15, 1899 by Andrew W. Mellon and his wife Clara Barton Mellon as a seaside resort with a population of 100 people. By 1915 it had grown to 2,000 people and by 1925 had reached 5,000 residents. In 1959 Vero Beach became an unincorporated municipality and its first mayor was Art Rooney Sr., who also served as its first city manager. As an unincorporated municipality it enjoyed no local government tax status but did not have to pay county taxes like municipalities do now. In 1984 Vero Beach voters approved annexation by Miami-Dade County which increased its population size to 27,594 people (making it one of South Florida's most populous towns). In 2002 during the Hurricane Katrina aftermath much damage occurred within Vero Beach proper as well as adjacent communities such as Boca Raton and Lauderdale Lakes due to flooding caused by the storm surge (the highest water level ever recorded in this area) combined with high winds from Hurricane Wilma that night. After more than two years of reconstruction efforts including dredging and reopening several beaches essential for tourism development along with hiring over 1,100 workers from around South Florida VA Health System opened its new medical center at One Ocean Boulevard just off State Road A1A in downtown Vero Beach on October 30th 2006 renamed after Drs Katherine Lappin MD and Leonard Sussman MD who were instrumental in helping reopen many businesses lost during Katrina
