The history of the United States Army in Vero Beach, Florida can be traced back to World War I. The city of Vero Beach was founded by English settlers in 1892, and the first American military unit to be stationed there was the 1st Infantry Regiment, which arrived in 1917. In 1924, the 2nd Infantry Regiment was stationed here permanently. In 1939, America entered World War II and Vero Beach became one of its hubs. The USAAF Combat Crew Training School (CCTSS) was established here in 1942 and functioned as a ground training depot for American fighter pilots. In 1945, CCTSS moved to nearby Fort Myers and eventually became operational as Air Defense Command’s (ADC) First District Headquarters. The ADC remained headquartered here until it consolidated with other commands under Second Continental Army commander George Walton Wright’s command at Fort Walton Beach on 1 January 1947. At that time, First District Headquarters passed from ADC hands to Third United States Army headquarters at Miramar Castle before finally being transferred to Eighth Air Force on 15 May 1949 at Homestead AFB, Florida. During the Vietnam War period, ADCHQ HQ Detachment 549 saw action numerous times around Vero Beach between 1966-1975 including support of Operation Rolling Thunder against North Vietnam; however no combat engagements took place within city limits during that time frame attributable toArmyHQVeroBeach personnel only! On 15 October 1969 Captain John Fenton led a detachment from Company D 9th Marines into battle against elements of NVA/VC forces entrenched along Route 7 just east of town center while troops from Company A 3rd Marines patrolled Sector 17 adjacent thereto supporting 2nd Brigade VC Task Force Quang Tri; total Marine casualties: 5 killed & 22 wounded - all Marines were accounted for! Shortly thereafter “A Better day will come” – this is how locals remember that pivotal victory which helped pave way for eventual U.S.-Vietnamese peace contactagreement signed on 28 November 1970 following an intense firefight lasting several hours during which both sides lost significant numbers of men and property

In 1940 alone Vero had over 16 theme parks including 5 water parks (the last being Exotic World), 12 golf courses including one designed by Arnold Palmer himself (), 1 amusement park called White Sands which opened in 1946 (), 4 theaters (-2 closed), 3 cinemas (-1 reopened), 2 restaurants (+1 closed) and 3 bars - all open day or night (). Today most businesses have closed down or relocated away from what once was one of Florida’s most vibrant communities full of people enjoying itself – just like many things about this state that have changed over time such as job opportunities for Floridians outside of Daytona
