Tarpon Springs is a small town located in Volusia County, Florida. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The Tarpon Springs post office was established in 1892 and closed in 1953. The first settlers in what is now Tarpon Springs were Dutch emigrants who arrived in 1795 and named their community after an anchorage on the southern coast of Cuba that they found. The name "Tarpon" is derived from a manatee that Preble saw swimming near his plantation during a visit to St. Augustine in 1827. In 1848, John Thornton bought land at present-day Tarpon Springs for $2,000 from Major James Pugh of Jacksonville. Thornton renamed his new property "TARPON SPRINGS." In 1863, J H Bradley purchased land east ofpresent-day Tarpon Springs from General Andrew Johnson for $1,500 dollars and built a house there which he named "Bradley's Landing." It was here that he met Driscoll and began trading with him on white cotton plantations throughout the southwest region. In 1865, when Confederate forces burned down Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, Bradley moved his business to Mobile Bay where he continued trading with the Confederacy until its fall. From Mobile Bay he sailed to Key West to trade saltpeter (saltpetre) with Spain and other European markets before returning home via PensacolaBayou crossing into Florida on July 5th,1866 He donated all this saltpeter business to Pensacola University which has been conducting research on it ever since! On December 12th 1860 Anna Maria Tuttle along with her husband John Tuttle (born November 5th 1840) filed a claim for lands within present day Tarpon Springs Township & District No 2 against David Vaughan for Indian Land west of mile marker 25 on said tract claiming: “All That Part Of This Township Which lies Between And including The River On Which We Now Live” A map filed by David Vaughan shows: Page 3 Map Of Indian Territory Hereinafter referred To As “Trip=land Claim” – Making same Location as claimed by Anna Maria Tuttle & her husband John Tuttle-(See Map attached).
