Tamarac, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Hollywood metro area. The land that now makes up Tamarac was acquired by the United States government in 1813 as part of Fort Brooke's acquisition of what is now Polk County and parts of Seminole County. Tamarac began as a Methodist Episcopal congregation called New Hope from meetinghouses on Tarpon Creek east of present-day Tamarac Boulevard and Old U.S. 1 (now US 191). The first post office was established here in 1821. In 1886, it became the county seat for Polk County after being moved to Kissimmee from Sanford. In 1957, it reverted to its original name and mailing address. The town site was surveyed by Captain John Smith in 1795 and named for him's wife Tecumseh (pronounced "tah-muh-rahs"). He donated 130 acres (50 ha) to the Methodist Episcopal Church on July 10, 1796 as a land grant known as "The Park". On December 12, 1814, Governor James Kenedy issued an order giving this tract of land comprising present day Tamarac Village including all or part of present day Chulupe Road and also portions of Old US 1 be bounded by East Lake Street on the north; Cypress Avenue on the south; Highland Avenue on the west; Plantation Road between these streets on the east side; but no lot line should be included within said boundaries anyhow so long as such lots may hereafter fall within any other public or private estate which may hereafter be purchased or given away for public use hereinabove mentioned .
