When the United States Air Force was created in 1947, there were few specific plans or guidelines for how it should be organized. On July 15th 1969 President Richard Nixon announced that daylight bombing operations against North Vietnam would cease effective September 16th due to increasing military opposition from South Vietnam. The decision effectively ended American involvement in the war in Southeast Asia. This marked a turning point in Air Force history as it transitioned from an essentially aerial combat force to one characterized by land warfare capabilities. Tamarac is a small town in Polk County, Florida., located on the banks of the St. Johns River. The population was 2,699 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Methodists in 1872 as a station on what is now US 1. At that time it was known as "Bentonville." In 1904, Tamarac became a separate municipality and its name changed to Tamarac proper. In 1961, it incorporated as an unincorporated community with a population of just over 100 people. A post office operated in Tamarac from 1903 until 1959; its ZIP code was 32210. Tamarac falls within the historical boundaries of Jax (now Jacksonville) but has never been connected to that city politically or culturally so it retains some unique aspects that make it stand out from other towns in this area such as its large number of Native American descendants (estimated at about 25%). In the early 1800s, Tamarac was a small community on the coast of Florida. The town was founded by English colonists in 1775 as part of the larger colony of Pensacola. At its peak, Tamarac had around 1,000 residents and was a prosperous commercial center. However, during the American Revolution, Tamarac sided with British forces and lost its charter as a result. In 1813, following annexation by Florida, Tamarac became part of Jacksonville. After Jacksonville's incorporation into the United States in 1821, it began to decline in population and economic importance. By 1850, only a handful of people remained in Tamarac. By 1900, it had all but disappeared from memory.
