The Tallahassee Coast Guard was founded in 1917. The first coast guard station was built on the Florida Keys and the first duty of the Coast Guard was to provide defense against piracy. In 1951, the Coast Guard activated its helicopter squadron and began flying search and rescue missions. In 1978, the Tallahassee Coast Guard Station became a unit of the United States Coast Guardsmen Training Command (USCGC). In 1995, USCGC Tallahassee assumed operational control of Brunswick County Sheriff's Department's Helicopter Squadron. Today, USCGC Tallahassee provides security for both citizens and visiting dignitaries along Florida's Gulf coast. The Coast Guard also operates two Chinook helicopters for Search and Rescue operations; one located at Jupiter Key Marina and another at Ponce de Leon Island.

Tallahassee, Florida is the capital of Florida and the largest city in the state. The population of Tallahassee was 207,827 as of July 1, 2015. It is located on the Gulf Coast between Mobile Bay to the north and Pensacola Bay to the south. The area that now makes up Tallahassee was first settled by Native American groups in what is now Alabama before being moved to what is now Tallahassee by Spain in 1764. In 1821, it became part of Georgia before becoming a Seminole colony in 1835. After Mexican annexation in 1846, TallahasSEE became part of Florida under United States rule until Indian removal began in 1830. The city was established as a slaveholding center with African Americans working primarily for white farmers until after World War II when most black Floridians left for economic reasons or because they were integrated into white society. A large number returned during Reconstruction and after WWII but many others remain today including Hispanics and Asians who have formed their own enclaves within black American society.

Bush) and Democratic Congressman Vernon Jordan (the first black congressman from Florida). Tallahassee also has many art galleries, theaters, restaurants, and other cultural attractions that make it an attractive place to live or visit. The city is known for its annual State Fair which features large-scale agriculture and livestock exhibits as well as several rodeos each year.
In the 1840s, Tallahassee was a small community of only about 150 people. By 1860, it had grown to over 1,000 people and was one of the most important slave-owning communities in Florida. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Tallahassee was captured by Confederate forces and renamed Richmond. After the war, Tallahassee reverted back to its original name and slowly grew into a major center for slave trade and cotton production. The city's fortunes changed again in the early 1900s when it became an important target of white supremacists in Jacksonville for their support of racism. In 1933, following passage of the National Origins Act which treated African Americans as second-class citizens, Tallahassee experienced another period of rapid growth and development thanks to new taxes and investment from businessmen like J.P. Morgan. However, by 1940 much of TallahasSEE had been destroyed by fire caused by arsonist attacks on businesses tied to black people
