The Tallahassee, Florida Army Garrison is one of the oldest military installations in the United States and has been serving its community since 1822. The Garrison was founded by General Andrew Jackson as a means to provide support for his efforts in Homestead, Florida during the Seminole War. After the war, Jackson ordered that all military equipment be removed from the state and stored at Fort Walton Beach on Pensacola Bay. In 1824, General John C. Smith decided to keep the Garrison and moved it to Tallahassee. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union forces at Fort Pickens in southeastern Alabama. The garrison was needed for protection and soon began providing services such as artillery fire support for both Union and Confederate troops. It also played an important role in helping to defend Tallahassee from Confederate attacks throughout the duration of the war. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, General George M. McClellan directed that all military infrastructure be destroyed includingFort Pickens which was used as a storage depot for newly acquired land west of Atlanta. However,the Garrison survived and arrived back home in Tallahassee on December 8th, 1868 after being relocated from Mobile Bay (now Mobile) Alabama two months earlier. It remained here until 1949 when it was transferred to Fort Polk Louisiana along with other military installations across Southeast America due to cuts made by Congress following World War II known as The Pentagon Build-up program (also called The Truman Doctrine). The Garrison’s history reflects its current role within society; providing cultural experience for soldiers while they are stationed here while also serving their community through various events such as parades and concerts held each year during Armed Forces Day celebrations which reflect local culture while also highlightingArmy Service members’ contributions thereto

Tallahassee, Florida is a city in the U.S. state of Florida, located on the Apalachicola River. Tallahassee is the capital of Florida and also its largest city. The population was 1,759,848 as of 2017[1] making it the fifteenth-most populous city in Florida and the eleventh-largest in America. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America due to its large Cuban and Venezuelan populations as well as its large Haitian population. The original town site was established by Spanish missionaries on what is now known as Live Oak Street between 1836 and 1838.[2] In 1865, Captain John Caulfield moved his store near present day US 27 and Polk Boulevard to what would become the core of Tallahassee.[3][4] The first courthouse was built on Capitol Square in 1868,[5][6] with a jail (now known as Third Court House) being completed two years later. In 1870, General Folsom built an arsenal at what became State Road #2 which served as a center for trade with Native American tribes along Indian Lakeouka Creek until it was abandoned in 1916 when Fort Pickens was constructed adjacent to Indian Lakeouka Creek.[7] In 1903,[8] Congress passed act 753 which provided for election of Mayor by popular vote instead of runoff system used then for electing City Marshal; this change however did not take effect until 1907 when Mayor Waddell won re-election using this system[9]. The early 20th century saw rapid growth due to cotton plantations that were founded throughout central Alabama by African Americans seeking work on white rice plantations during Reconstruction period following Civil War; during this time TallahasSEE had about 100 residents per square mile (40 per square kilometer). This development led to increased congestion and pollution within the city limits which were exacerbated by redlining policies implemented by banks after World War II – these restrictions discouraged black people from owning homes within blocks or even miles of downtowns while giving preference to white citizens who could afford more expensive housing outside those areas. By 1960 there were only 12 residents living within blocks or miles of downtown compared to over 150 residents living within blocks or miles outside downtown according to census data from 1950 alone[10]: a trend that continued into today’s urban area where less than one percent (0.01%) of all Floridians live inside Downtown Miami’s boundaries without ever having visited Miami proper! The history of Tallahassee, Florida begins with the arrival of Spanish traders in the area in 1565. The first permanent Indian settlement was established by trader Juan Ponce de Leon on Palm Island in 1763. In 1821, Seminole Indians attacked and burned down the courthouse and jail, killing several people. After a series of successful wars against Seminoles, the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1821. The area that now includes Tallahassee was part ofJackson County until it was split off from Fulton County in 1907. Tallahassee became an important center for trade during this time and its location made it a natural choice as the capital of Florida Territory. The city underwent many changes during its early years, including being renamed after Creek Chief Moseley in 1824. It experienced another name change in 1866 when it was named for General James Kenedy (1786-1848). The city’s growth continued during the American Civil War; both Union and Confederate troops camped here for months at a time. On November 1, 1861, Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked Union forces entrenched at Fort Donelson near Tallahassee before withdrawing to safety across Lake Pontchartrain south of Baton Rouge. This attack is considered one of the most significant engagements of the war and helped lead to Early’s capture two days later at Murfreesboro Ridge outside Chattanooga, Tennessee
Tallahassee is the capital of Florida and the seat of government for the state. The city was founded in 1835 as a trading post on Tallahassee River. The first permanent Spanish settlement in what is now Florida was at Stonington, east of modern Tallahassee, in 1663. In 1835, Governor José Félix Yulín Cruz designated Tallahassee as the capital of Florida; it had been proposed to move Tampa from Hillsborough County to Tallahassee but no action was taken. In 1861, after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Tallahassee became part of the Union side during the American Civil War. Afterward, until Reconstruction began in 1870, Tallahasaesee remained an open-air slave market where African Americans were bought and sold by white citizens and officials until freedmen gained legal rights in 1865. During Reconstruction (1870-1877), many important Black lawmakers were elected to statewide office including James Mims (1902-1904) and Julius Rudolph (1925-1927). A new courthouse was built in downtown Tallahasaesee between 1892 and 1896 with Romanesque Revival architecture by architect Waddell Stevens. It served as the state capitol until 1927 when it burned down. The current building replaced one that burned down in 1896; it is a two-story Classical Revival structure designed by Ebenezer Howard Richardson with a massive granite façade measuring 137 feet (41 m) high and 50 feet (15 m) wide at its base supporting a copper dome weighing over 350 pounds (175 kg).
