Sweetwater is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Sweetwater goes back to 1881 when John Sweetwater founded a flour mill in what is now the town. The mill closed in 1946 but reopened in 1957 as a feed and grain company. In 1964, the company merged with Jiffy Lube Company and became known as Jiffy-Clark Corporation. As part of its corporate name change, Clark Brothers Foods became responsible for all aspects of production within the corporation including marketing and distribution. In 1998, Jiffy-Clark Corporation merged with Nabisco Inc., creating one of the largest food corporations in the world with assets (including television brands like Pillsbury Doughnuts and Chewy Bars) that totaled $72 billion at their peak. In recent years, Sweetwater has seen an increase in development due to its location on Umatilla Lake which provides waterfront access to miles of hiking trails and water sports opportunities both publically accessible from sweetwater creekwalk through downtown sweetwater to secluded areas up on hilltops overlooking lake charles; as well as some private acreage developments less accessible by public transportation or by foot but still providing great hunting/fishing opportunities for those who can find them! Many businesses have come and gone over time including: CVS Pharmacy (which left behind a large open area near Walmart), Ford dealership which closed down after many years of service then reopening under different ownership later that same year as Acreage Outfitters; KFC restaurants closed after many years serving up great chicken chain food until they were replaced by Pizza Hut; Dollar General store across from Walmart closed down around 2006 giving way to an auto parts store called AutoZone before being replaced again by another Dollar General store before finally closing around 2020 leaving just two storefronts remaining today - one occupied by IGA grocery store while the other is vacant! Sweetwater is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in Sweetwater was made on September 14, 1837 by John A. Williams and his family when they arrived from Georgia with their cattle and horses. In 1838, James Ketchum built a cabin on the banks of the Crystal River and named it Sweetwater after his sweet corn crop that he had brought over with him from Georgia. The first store in Sweetwater was established by William Halsey in 1843. In 1845, General David Troup founded Fort McIntosh here and named it for his commander during the Seminole War, General Andrew Johnson McIntosh. In 1865, Captain Gossage organized a detachment of Florida Volunteers to help suppress a Confederate uprising near Uniontown; this group became known as "Gossage's Rangers". Afterward, Gossage donated land to establish Sweetwater School District #2 which included much of what is now Polk County. One year later (1866), Gossage married Anna McIntosh and moved into what is now Longwood Park; they would live there until her death in 1968. In 1893, Jens Hansen opened the first gas station west of Tampa Bay in Sweetwater; he served customers until 1916 when he sold the business to Wm Satterfield relinquishing ownership to Mabel Beattie who operated it until 1924 when she closed it down due to Prohibition-era regulations banning alcohol sales at businesses within 2 miles of any public school or park serving students under 16 years old (the statute changed two years later). After World War II ended and America entered into an era of rationing which affected all aspects of life including food production throughout much of Southeast Asia as well as North America following World War II (), many farmers abandoned sugar cane farming in favor of other crops such as peanut beans (). However, some farmers did continue to grow sugar cane for fuel purposes until about 1960 (). When Interstate 95 was routed through Polk County between Sanford and Kissimmee in Atascosa County it created new opportunities for growth both commercial and residential property along I-95 northbound between Sanford Avenue/Upper Stonington Road (later State Road 4) eastbound just south Of Lake Worth Boulevard (now US 192) while I-195 continued south through present day Polk County without interruption providing access only from Sanford Ave./Upper Stonington Rd., just south Of Lake Worth Blvd., To Kissimmee & Indian Springs Roads opposite current US 192). This routing provided opportunities for developers such as Bill Dutton who purchased large tracts within I-95 corridor eastside Of State Road 4/Lake Worth Boulevard where state roads used to terminate before reaching Interstate 95 then developed properties including: Old Fort Myers Golf Club / Intersection Of SR 4 & SR 7A Wagon Wheel Ranch Resort - site includes Hotel Colonial Inn since 1957 upper level has been home to multiple golf courses & storage facilities PGA Tour Champions Honda Classic - multi weekend golf tournament hosted annually at Historic Donald Ross Country Club beginning May 9 thru May 13 past event has included professional golfer Tiger Woods Eden Prairie Horse Show - open air agricultural show held every fall consisting mostlyof horse racing events various agriculture shows also are held throughout year

The First National Bank building andSweetwater Middle School were both destroyed by a fire in 1951. Thecurrent Sweetwater High School building was built in 1957 and became operational that year.
