Sweetwater is a town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The town was named for a creek that ran through it. Sweetwater is located on the central peninsula of Florida and is bordered by Hillsborough County to the north and east, Pasco County to the south and west, and Lake Butler to the northwest. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Hillsborough County were Spanish explorers in 1565 who named the area "Los Mound Builders" after finding evidence of human activity near what is now Sweetwater Creek. A post office called Sweetwater was established in 1821, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1859, two men from Georgia named John Wills and George Rasmussen founded a farmstead known as Curryville about southeast of present-day Sweetwater Creek. Rasmussen soon became interested in farming this land which he had purchased from the Indians for $6 per acre (0.27 km²). He petitioned for land adjustment with Congress and acquired 640 acres (247 ha) of 3-month old swampland northeast of present-day Sweetwater Creek as part of his gift to America from Spain in 1868. This swampland later became part of Citrus Park when it was created from parts of Hillsborough and Pasco Counties around 1920s In 1901, Mills Corporation built a sawmill on Pinellas River just outside present day Sweetwater Creek.
