The Miami Navy Yard was founded as the Naval Air Station at Miami, Florida in 1925. The original airfield was located on Biscayne Boulevard and it served as a training ground for naval aviators. In 1941, the NAF became known as NAS Miami and it remained an active naval station until 1959 when it was closed and its facilities passed to the Miami-Dade County government. The NAS Miami property was used first as a landfill, then from 1974 to 1984 for landfills and other purposes before becoming a conservation park. In 1984, NASMiami became part of SouthMiami Parks & Recreation Department which continues to operate it today. After years of neglect, NASMiami is now being restored as a cultural resource that will offer visitors unique opportunities to explore its history and artifacts. As part of this project, the MIAHMI has designated portions of the airfield property as an open-air museum dedicated to maritime history and culture with exhibits on both military vessels operated by the navy during World War II and later commercial vessels used by the navy during peacetime periods.

The USS Miami (AGI-8) was a guided missile destroyer that served in the United States Navy during World War II. She was built at the Portsmouth, Virginia shipyard of the Bethlehem Steel Company, and launched on 5 December 1943. The ship was commissioned on 15 May 1945. Miami was damaged in a typhoon on 17 September 1944, and arrived at Pearl Harbor with damaged accommodation and equipment for repairs. After operations out of Hawaii she sailed for China on 3 October to take part in the Ling-Tung campaign. On 1 November 1945 Miami relievedescorts TG 7041 and TG 7401 as flagship of Destroyer Squadron 24 off Okinawa. A few days later she departed Okinawa for Japan where she decommissioned on 16 December 1945 and returned home to Portsmouth, Virginia, arriving there on 4 January 1946.

The city was founded on December 12, 1925 by American construction magnate Biltmore Baldwin II as a rustic seaside town on mile-long (1 km) wide Key Largo Beachfront known for its crystal clear waters and white sand beaches. In 1974, Baldwin donated the land now located within Parkland Memorial Hospital to South Miami City Schools for use as an open-air school park. After years of planning and fundraising by Mayor Manuel Diaz and School Board members Anthony Daye and Leticia Sanchez – with support from then US Senator Ted Kennedy – Parkland Memorial Hospital opened in November 1984 as one of South Miami's first public hospitals using state-of-the art technology provided by IBM’s Watson computer system. In 2002, during Hurricane Wilma's destructive Cartoonstorm surge that flooded much of downtown south Tallahassee – including Miramar Naval Air Station —South Miami responded with Operation Neptune's Spear: A coordinated response composed of more than 1,000 volunteers from throughout south Dade County armed with canoes, kayaks and lifejackets who spent five days trolling channels off various points along the coast before deploying into pursuit of any storms thought to be posing a threat to the area; this effort ultimately resulted in no damage or loss reported during or after Wilma. Since annexation by SouthMiamiCitySchools in 1974 there have been numerous civic improvements such as new parks/ Playgrounds/Campsites available such as Cervantes Park in Coconut Grove which offers shade & water play opportunities for children; 2 large tennis courts & 2 large basketball courts located just eastside of Museum District along International Boulevard near Ponce de Leon Avenue - making this one of most active community areas in town - As well as many small businesses that have sprung up around these amenities making it easy for residents to get what they need without having to leave their homes

The first immigrants to arrive in what is now South Miami were Cuban refugees who fled Fidel Castro's regime in their homeland. Portuguese traders also came to South Miami after being expelled from Cuba during the American Revolution. In 1836, Henry Flagler founded what would become known as Flagler's Sunoco Railway which ran through and around today's downtown area and served as an important link between Fort Lauderdale and eastern Jacksonville. By 1840, most of What became today's south side of town had been developed along Commercial Boulevard with makeshift buildings made out of logs or other materials thatched with palm fronds or straws for shade or shelter during summer months when temperatures topped 100 degrees F (40 degrees C). Today most of that development still stands; however much has been replaced with new office towers and homes built since then including many high-rise condominium complexes such as One Financial Center at One University Place and Signature Tower at Brickell Avenue & Aventura Boulevard In 1898, two brothers named Edward Ladd opened a grocery store at Third Street/Aventura Boulevard called "Ladd Bros." From its inception until 1907 it was one of the few stores open late into the night in this part of town - something that helped make it well known throughout Southwest Florida In 1923 construction began on what would eventually become Marlins Stadium - one of America’s first professional sports stadiums It wasn’t until 1954 that land adjacent to what is now Sun Life Arena was purchased adjacent to wetlands near present day Everglades Road/Brickell Avenue - giving rise to nearby Marlins Park name given that baseball games were traditionally played there rather than at Bartow Stadium which was across I-95 from downtown . The park also saw use for other events such as motorcycling races (now NASCAR races) until 1976 when all major events moved permanently indoors due toaturability concerns . After years plagued by problems with parking lot capacity (due largely to its location within walking distance both from some older neighborhoods located closer Downtown and newer areas just off Brickell Ave.), expansion occurred starting with Flamingo Drive extending all the way onto Patel Rd beyond Wynwood into Overtown beginning in 2007 followed by Lincolnshire Drive starting down Lincolnshire towards Marlins Way .. This led eventually to annexation proceedings against neighboring Biscayne Bayou City which resulted in Mapleton Place being annexed into SouthMiami effective August 1st 2009 .... With annexation complete came dramatic changes including: incorporation of newly created Little Havana neighborhood next door alongwith more than doubling tennis courts available inside stadium Widening streets leading away from stadium making it easier for cars parked along those streets accessible inside while “Parking Lots” were created within boundaries set forth by city ordinance For most people living outside stadium boundaries these lots represented their only access outsideof hours during games... lesser restrictions apply during matches days/hours when stadium is not in use..... Finally following Hurricane Irma hitting mainland FLORIDA on September 15th 2017 , several blocks surrounding stadium were destroyed resulting in large number
The area now known as South Miami was first inhabited by the Timucua people. In 1565, Captain Pedro Menendez of Santo Domingo discovered a new island in the same area and named it Santiago de Cuba. The island became part of Spain in 1898 after a war with American forces. The United States acquired the land from Spanish America during World War II as part of the Pancho Villa Invasion. The Miami-Dade County government was established on January 1, 1913, and annexation of unincorporated territory followed on May 1, 1914. On December 16, 1928, Hurricane Flora caused extensive damage to south Miami-Dade County and its effect has been likened to that of Katrina when it hit New Orleans ten days later.
