Seminole is a town in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,594 at the 2010 census. Seminole is part of the Gainesville–Lake Mary area and is adjacent to the University of Florida's Sanford campus. The first settlers in what would become Seminole were French Canadians who arrived in 1763 as part of the fur trade with Spain. They named their land "Simmons" after John Simmons, an English trader who had been killed during a Spanish expedition near Tampa Bay. In 1835, US troops burned down the Baptist church that stood on what is nowSeminole Boulevard; it was rebuilt and became known as First Methodist Episcopal Church (now Chapel Square). The town name was changed to Seminole in 1907 when it was annexed by Gainesville. In 1949, Tampa Bay's largest city annexation created Alachua County and its seat became Sanford; however, Gainesville retained some control over Seminole through its annexation statute. In 1984, then-Governor Lawton Chiles proposed annexing Seminole into Lakeland so that they could share resources like water and power but this proposal never gained much traction due to opposition from local residents. A study done in 2000 found that annexation would have no real impact on the economy or social fabric of Seminole because there are few if any businesses located within its boundaries.
