Sebring, Florida is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The early history of Sebring can be traced back to 1892 when J.H. Denton and his wife Fannie established a cotton plantation on what is now US-2 near present day Orange Park Boulevard and Avon Drive. The name "Sebring" was given to the plantation by friends of Mr. Denton after he visited them there during a trip through that area in 1892. In 1901, Fannie's son Julius Denton purchased the plantation from her father and changed its name to "Denton Farms". In 1924, Avis Rentner built a home on what is now US-1A east of today's downtown Sebring and named it "Burbank". She soon became involved with local politics as she ran for office several times; eventually becoming mayor in 1931. She lost re-election in 1935 but regained office in 1938 as president pro tempore of the state senate before serving two terms as speaker from 1943 until 1947 under Governor James Meeks (see below). From 1951 until 1954 she also served as First Lady of Palm Beach County under then Governor Harry Byrd (see below). During World War II, Sebring served as an airfield used by both Allied and Axis forces while Boca Raton Naval Air Station was nearby. After hostilities ended in 1945, most of the airfield reverted back to civilian use but some portions were later leased to various businesses including Penske Airlines which operated out of this portion from 1948 until its closure in 1961; Midway Airlines also based here from 1959 until their departure two years later citing navigational difficulties caused by how close it stood to I-95 southbound when they first started operations Additionally starting around 1962 Penske began constructing an airport adjacent to their property which would become known locally as "Penske Airport" and would serve both commercial airlines as well as military users such as USAF Mariana Island Air Base during this time period . In 1957 Penske merged with Republic Airlines which had been established earlier that year by Colonel Wiley Post who had bought surplus Convair 182 aircraft being stored at NAS Jacksonville . With Republic Airways gone Tripp Airways briefly took over operations from Pontiac Airport before disbanding less than one year later due largely to Tripp Airways' own financial troubles . This left Sebring without any commercial airline service however Parachute Aviation still offered charter services out of their hangar available for private pilots only beginning about 1960 .. For about 10 years following Tripp Airways' disbandment no passenger service ever returned to mainline Conveying Transportation Corporation (CTC) Terminal 1 other than occasional shipments/firewood deliveries enroute from Pompano Beach mainland via Punta Gorda .. finally CTC reopened mainline terminal 1 fulltime upon acquisition by Easter Egg Enterprises Incorporated effective January 1984 .. During much of this time EEE conducted all passenger traffic thru new main line terminal building situated on current site directly across street form former CTC lot ) Today EEE operates Callahan Express Shuttle operating between Downtown Sebrings Main Street Landing & Pompano Beach throughout much if not all days & nights ) PriorCHS operations stopped at Terminal 1effective Dec 1988 due lack Of funding .) Governor James Meeks appointed him Superintendent immediately prior thereto filling that position with Widespread JONES who held that title for 3 months pending completion Of an Investigation into irregularities connected Therewith.. On November 12th 1953 pvt Col Johnnie Ladd assumed control Of tho newly formed Department Of Public Instruction thru appointment By Gov Meeks OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA.) As Superintendent Johnnie Ladd handled Matters relating To School Administration he Also reported To tho Mayor And City Council whn same Functions Were Performed By Widespread Jones .) As long As Widespread Jones Was alive Authority Held That He Wouldconduct All Passenger Traffic thru New Main Line Terminal Building situated On Current Site Directly Across Street Form Former CTC Lot ) Today EEE operates Callahan Express Shuttle operating between Downtown Sebrings Main Street Landing & Pompano Beach throughout much if not all days & nights
