Sebring is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Welsh-born explorers in 1868 as "Sebring Plantation". The name derived from the Spanish word "sarus" meaning sandalwood or woodruff, and English word "brecknell", meaning Breckenridge Mountains. The first post office in Sebring was established in 1875. It changed its name to Sebring on May 8, 1912. The town's founding occurred during Florida's Reconstruction Era after the Civil War when many freedmen (many of whom were Welsh) came to America to find their fortune and build new lives. In 1919, Sebring became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six city commissioners elected at large instead of via districting like towns did back then. In 1925, Shopping Boulevard was built as one of Sebring's first projects by developer Arnold Hirschfeld who named it for his father (Shopping Boulevard refers to a section of Route 1 that runs through downtown). Today, while most businesses have closed or relocated away from what once was an active shopping center filled with Kmart and Sears stores along I-95A which bisected the town until just recently there are now only 2 small convenience stores remaining: Lowe’s and JCPenney both closed in late 2017 due to being unable to compete against larger chains elsewhere in Jacksonville area; also small grocery store GAS has been around since 1978 but had no major competition until 2018 when they merged with Kroger nearby giving them much space within walking distance from most residents anymore; other commercial buildings such as churches/synagogues have all disappeared over time leaving only unpaved lots currently housing homes for either renters or occasional visitors looking for some extra income on a slow summer night
