In the early 1960s, some residents who disliked having their namesakes separate from them formed a group known as "Beach Boys." They campaigned to have their town merged with Dunedin so that they would be able to keep their name and all their associated amenities – such as beaches, pools and shopping centers – without needing to leave Satellite Beach behind. Their efforts failed but helped spur development along Ocean Drive which now forms much of what makes up satellite town's core business district today. As more people moved into town during the late 1990s amid robust economic growth rates throughout central Florida (due particularly to global forces), there began an exodus of homeless individuals from nearby Fort Walton Beach which made life difficult for both communities; eventually leading officials in Alachua County to pass laws seeking to address this problem head-on. In response, Mayor Randy Dunn initiated aggressive outreach campaigns targeting homeless individuals living near popular tourist destinations like Canaveral National Seashore rather than just focus on providing services specifically tailored towards these populations – something that he continues today as city manager for Satellite Beach through his nonprofit organization dubbed Sunrise Rescue Mission). The name comes from the fact that the town was located on an artificial island in Miami Bay called "Satellite Beach." Satellite Beach's population peaked at 2,500 in 1930, but has since dropped to around 1,000 people today. The first settlers of Satellite Beach were J.C.'s father-in-law and mother-in-law, who arrived together from Stonington, Connecticut on October 21st 1920 with their three children: James C., Lillie A., and John Fenton White II (Jr.). They had been taken captive during World War I and were released in 1918 after being exchanged for American soldiers held by the Germans. The Whites were farmers in nearby Indian River before moving to Satellite Beach in 1920 because they believed that it would be easier to get food prices down when selling their crops through local markets rather than shipping them all the way to Miami and then back again. The original town hall was built on what is now State Road 441A north of the present day beach courthouse complex which opened its doors on December 3rd 1922. It served as a temporary meeting place until a permanent building could be constructed which still stands today; it is also known as "The Old Courthouse". The first post office opened at satellite beach on January 10th 1923; it operated out of J.C.'s house until 1927 when he moved into his own home across State Road 441A from where he operated until his death in 1985).
