Satellite Beach grew rapidly due to its location and became an incorporated city in 1951 with a population of 25,000. The city limits expanded to include portions of Pinellas County in 1959 and again to include Eleuthera Island in 1988; these expansions increased the total population to over 50,000 by 2000. In recent years Satellite Beach has lost some residents because of development near its shores: its most recent annexation added about 4 square miles (10 km2) to Pinellas County but did not increase its population by more than 2%.
