The Sarasota National Military Museum has a rich and colorful history of Army deployed gift history. The museum is located in the heart of downtown Sarasota, on the corner of First and Third Streets. It was founded in 1907 by Rear Admiral Alfred P. Sloan as the Sarasota War Memorial Museum. In 1916, it became the Sarasota Naval Reserve Armory and then the Sarasota War Memorial Museum again in 1937. The museum changed its name to the Sarasota National Military Museum in 1946 after it merged with the Florida State Historical Society’s Soldier’s Home Collection to form one large repository for military artifacts statewide. Army deployments have been a part of life here since World War II when America's first military forces were mobilized for service in Europe. After more than sixty years of being open to the public, this unique museum now contains more than 2,500 items from both American and international militaries as well as archives dating back to 1907 including objects from both World Wars I and II. This diverse collection provides an interesting insight into how different people have treated war - some donated items while others collected them over time due to their personal connection to military service or patriotism. During World War II, Nazi Germany made great strides in their war effort by deploying large numbers of troops into occupied territories such as Russia and Italy. This led to significant losses for Allied forces, but ultimately helped them win the war against Nazi Germany. In contrast, Japan had little involvement in World War II other than launching bombing raids against major targets within European cities.

Sarasota is a town in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 28,361 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on November 6, 1878 by General John C. Riley and Dr. James Gadsden as a small community called "Hernando". In 1907 it changed its name to Sarasota after the thenropa (now Sarasota Bay) and became an incorporated municipality on December 1, 1909. On January 1, 1933 it merged with neighboring Port Charlotte to form the largest city in Southwest Florida with a population of over 200,000 people. The city's growth slowed in the 1970s as suburban development encroached on its eastern edge and its water supply dwindled; however, since 2000 it has resumed rapid growth with annexations from Bradenton and Plant City. The first inhabitants of what is now Sarasota were Indian traders who had migrated from South Carolina during the British Exploring Expedition of 1783–84 under Captains James Cook and Robert Falcon Scott. They named their new settlement Hernando after one of their number - José de la Cruz y Arellano y Costilla - who had been killed while leading an expedition into Southeastern Cuba along side Captain Manuel de Ayala about two years earlier. American settlers arrived soon thereafter: Captains George Wetherbee (1792), Nicholas Biddle (1801), David Brower (1802), William Pritchett (1803), Isaiah Norris (1806), Lewis Cassius Clay (1828). By 1838 there were 256 white men living in Hernando; by 1839 there were 364 white men living in Sarasota County combined! A Methodist mission was established near present day downtown Sarasota in 1839 which served as a center for missionary activity throughout Southwest Florida In 1840 Samuel Gibbs moved his printing press from Savannah to Fort Myers Beachfront where he published "The Miami Herald" until his death in 1865 In 1861 Confederate forces burned down several local businesses during battle at Second Seminole War skirmish known as Battle of Fort Myers On July 4th 1860 US Naval Officer Augustus Kelley sank HMS Terror off Cape Lookout Key while patrolling southbound along Gulf coast looking for blockade runners off Cape Lookout which resulted in protests from nearby residents that evening when news spread among local whites that an "invincible navy" had been destroyed – this event made headlines all over America including some large newspapers A group led by Captain John Smedley boarded USS Constitution anchored offshore at Marathon Point on May 12th 1862 to protest arming slaves lost aboard ship during CSS Alabama's bombardment of Mobile Bay three weeks earlier After successfully negotiating passage through Union blockade they arrived Key West Florida on September 10th disembarking more than 2200 peaceful Africans who would be forced labor aboard various warships until 1863 when all slaves were abolished within Confederate States Two black sailors also participated onboard USS Constitution but would not be mentioned again until much later
The city of Sarasota was founded in 1892 by J.P. Morgan, a American banker and investment advisor. The city was named for the Sarasota River, which was a key route for traders and travelers during the early 1800s. The area that is now Sarasota was first inhabited by Native American tribe known as the Seminoles. In 1819, the United States acquired Florida from Spain in the Treaty of Paris following their war for independence from Spain. In 1829, Thaddeus Stevens proposed that an Allen Key be created in Lake Okeechobee to ferry goods between Indian Key and Miami and provide a passage across Lake Michigan for steamboats sailing down theMississippi River. However, this proposal did not come to fruition because no one wanted to invest in such a venture. In 1851, James Sneath donated land at what is now downtown Sarasota to build a courthouse and jail; this donation became part of town square today. In 1861, it was reported thatCaptain John Bate had captured 150 slaves off of Florida’s coast while sailing his brig “ CSS Alabama” on what is now called Captain John Bate Day State Park near West Palm Beach Harbor; this event made news all over America due to its shocking nature and raised awareness about slavery in America at this time. soon after reports of this slave capture spread throughout South Florida there were protests organized against Captain John Bate's actions by various abolitionists who believed that slavery should be abolished everywhere without exception regardless of where it originated from
