In the early 1800s, Safety Harbor was a small town in Duval County, Florida. The area now known as Safety Harbor was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1700s. The first European to live in Safety Harbor was Nicholas Biddle, who arrived in 1768. By 1835,Safety Harbor had a population of around 100 people. On October 24, 1837,Captain John Vandemare set out from Jacksonville with his brigantine schooner "Nathaniel" for what would be his final attempt to find a new home for his family and build himself an estate on Franklin Key. He failed and returned home after four months without finding any suitable vessels or land for them to disembark on. On November 12th of that year, Captain Vandemare's wife Elizabeth (née Marks) went ashore on Franklin Key with their two children while their father sailed off in one of his vessels for Havana Cuba with supplies bound for Pensacola Bay and then Jamaica . At some point during the voyage back to Jacksonville Mrs. Vandemare became pregnant and continued sailing until they reached safety harbor; she gave birth at sea and then spent several weeks recuperating before finally returning home on December 4th aboard her husband's ship "Catalina". Commodore James Lockwood immediately offered Mrs. Vandemare asylum on board his ship should she ever become pregnant again but she refused because she knew her husband would never allow her to leave him unprotected again when he could so easily have taken advantage of her situation again. Aftermath The Commodore made another offer whichElizabeth accepted but only if they buried their child right away since it would not do any good expecting him eventually to come looking for them again given how long he'd been gone…. They buried their son Nicolas Montero III under some trees just outside of town limits near where today's Boulevard Street crosses over from Duval County into Nassau County
