Safety Harbor, Florida is a city located on the west coast of Tampa Bay in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 41,814 at the 2010 census. It is home to Hooters and various other restaurant chains. In 1865, William Meigs began planting coffee beans in Safety Harbor after moving from Boston. In 1867, Wm Young established a small grocery store in town which became known as "The Coffee House". By 1870, there were five coffee shops in town with an total of eighty-six customers. In 1872, Wm Young's son Julius opened the firstissa café and named it "The Coffee House & Bakery". The business continued to grow until 1915 when it was taken over by Harry Ransom who changed the name to "Harry's Cafe" before selling it to Eddie Stroud in 1964. Safety Harbor became a popular tourist spot for boaters due to its wide variety of seafood available both fresh and canned. In 1927, Harry's Cafe started serving cold beer for the first time ever! In 1958-1959 safety harbor had their 1st ice cream truck! In 1969-1970 Hooters opened their first restaurant here with some original designs that included high ceilings and 100% wooden walls giving them what they called 'TheOriginalHooters'. In 1912 Governor Judson Broughton signed a bill passed by the state legislature making it illegal for any person or company without prior permission from boththe state government and local governments to operate an oil well within 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of any school or public building in this state without first obtaining written consent from both parties involved.
