Rockledge is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community of Rockledge was founded in 1892 by citizens of Stonington, Connecticut as a stop on the Pensacola and Tallahassee Railroad. The name derived from a bluff near the town's center which overlooked Clearwater Harbor. The railroad station was built on what is now Fourth Street and it served as a primary commercial center for the area until 1925 when Interstate 95 (I-95) was completed cutting off access to most of the town. The first settlers in Rockledge were Englishmen who arrived with Captain John Smith during his 1763 exploration of Florida Keys. They named their new settlement after General James Kenedy who had led an expedition against Spanish forces at that same location three years earlier. In 1892, when the Pensacola and Tallahassee Railroad reached Rockledge from Stonington, it became one of its main stops along its route between Tampa and St Petersburg. In 1925, I-95 replaced the old railroad system and although traffic continued to flow through Rockledge until after World War II, it no longer had a significant impact on its economy; instead, commerce became centered around nearby Clearwater Beach which enjoyed increased popularity due to its beautiful environment and amenities such as beachfront shopping malls and private hospitals during that time period. A post office operated in Rockledge from 1895 to 1969; however, it never achieved significant growth due to low population density compared to other towns along I-95 which experienced more rapid development over that time period. In 1995, before I-95 expanded into Polk County beyond downtown Tampa proper (the original intent of the highway), Rockledge reverted back to its original name - simply "Rockledge." Rockledge has undergone several incarnations since then: first becoming an annexed section of Hillsborough County following local government consolidation in 2004; then again becoming part of Pinellas County following passage of Amendment 2 back in 2008; finally reverting back to Polk County following passage of Amendment 3 back in 2012 which created new district boundaries for Pinellas County including much larger areas within present day Rockledge than existed prior thereto within existing county borders - making it one Of five communities incorporated into Pinellas County under this new arrangement without any formal vote or process other than designation by county commissioners themselves!

Rockledge is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1892 by two brothers, William and Harvey Rockledge. The name comes from a nearby ridge on which they built their home. They were farmers and began to develop the land around the community afterCANADA-US TEXAS Railroad lines arrived in 1903 and 1905 respectively. The first school in Rockledge was started in 1907 and it closed in 1912 due to financial difficulties. A new school opened in 1915 with 10 students and it operated until 1951 when it closed permanently due to lack of funding. In 1916, Harry Halsey opened his grocery store on Second Street near where modern day Interstate 95 meets US 66/County Road 441 (now State Road 527). He became well known for his wide variety of groceries including processed meats, canned goods, hardware etc., which he sold door to door as a "grocery man." In 1924 he merged with the Southeastern Grocery Co., Inc., becoming one of the largest grocery stores west of Pennsylvania. His son Harry Halsey Jr.'s death left the company into receivership but it was successfuly revived under Harry's niece Mildred Barden's ownership before being acquired by Aramark Corporation in 1984 and then kept by that company until 2009 when it went bankrupt . Aramark also developed much of what is now downtown Rockledge during this time including First National Bank (1924), Armour Building (1929), American Legion Post NoB 324 (1942), JAG Services Incorporated (1974-1991) - once home to Jeb Bush Sr.'s political headquarters during his campaigns for governor of Florida, as well as several other businesses such as Taco Bell & Pizza Hut; local car dealership; ExxonMobil gas station; Donny & Marie's restaurant; rockledge high school now called Parkland HS
