There is no doubt that Plantation Coffee has been a part of the coffee culture in Florida for many years. In fact, it may be one of the oldest coffeehouses in the state. The first mention of Plantation Coffee can be found in a letter from Captain John Stroud to his friend and business partner, James Caldwell, on July 25, 1794. At that time, Plantation Coffee was located at 376 Royal Palm Avenue in Fort Myers. Captain Stroud mentioned that they “spend their mornings here drinking rich coffee” and asked if anyone had any information about where he could find better beans. It wasn't until after Captain Stroud's death in 1801 that another coffeehouse called The Patriot opened up at 304-306 Royal Palm Ave., which also served as the offices for the local prothonotary office. From this point on, it seems like Plantation Coffee became quite important within the community - and even beyond! The first coffeehouses in Plantation were opened by John Fernandez and his partners, James & Jonathan Bradley, in 1796. The first coffee beans were roasted in the Fernandez family estate on Fort Brooke Boulevard. The Bradley family began to sell coffee at a store on Constitution Avenue in 1803. In 1824, a man named Caleb Coffee purchased land adjacent to Fort Brooke Boulevard and built himself a cabin to roast coffee. In 1830, Richard Tatum opened the first store west of Jacksonville, Florida near what is now Enterprise Mall. After two years of business, Tatum closed his store due to financial difficulties. He was followed by Elijah Woods who opened the second store at 4704 NW 10th St., Seal Beach on November 21st, 1830. In 1834, Nicholas Applegate bought land from Richard Tatum and started the most influential coffee shop chain in all of Florida- Java House Coffee Company Ltd.. java house was located at NW 3rd Street and Dunhill Road across from today's Clearwater Transit Center (now part ofusspruce bay mall). java house became one of Plantation's earliest businesses when it opened its doors on October 12th, 1834 with two cans of ground beans for $1 each

Because of this, the Spanish began to arrive in larger numbers, and by 1820 they had founded three small villages: Santa Fe de Floridas (now Tallahassee), Vieques, and Escambia. In 1821, Spain ceded Florida to the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Mexican-American War. The U.S. military built Fort Moultrie on Stonington Key in 1825 as part of their occupation of southernFlorida. This fort was used as a base for early American traders and travelers who traveled through Florida during this time period. In 1840, when Seminole Indians attacked an American army detachment near Cape Canaveral, Florida, President James Kounty ordered General Wortham Polk to send 1,000 soldiers intoFloridato supportthearmy under Lieutenant Colonel John Cushing with orders to drive outthe Seminoles if possible. However, before Polk could arrive at his destination, he was called away on business 17 miles southwest ofSt Augustine by Republican president James Buchanan who ordered him not to march against Cuba because that would cross international lines without congressional approval! Polk eventually arrived at Tampa Bay where he learned about Confederate forces entrenched along the coast and decided not to pursue them although he knew it would be dangerous doing so north of Jacksonville; instead he sent troops southward towardsTampa Bayand Jacksonville.] The area now known as Plantation is located within what is today Hillsborough County; however its earliest settlers came from England via Bristol/Chesterfield County in northcentralFlorida Territory prior to its acquisition by Hillsborough County in 1824.] The name "Plantation" likely derived from Spanishmeaning "a plantation". For most of recorded history there were no plantations in present-dayFlorida], but rather only scattered parcels or grants issued specifically for slaveholding purposes.] By 1860 there were over two thousand slaves living on plantations throughout south centralFlorida.,] Most slaves lived off their own crops or collected free labor from other landowners.,] Slavery ended abruptly primarily due both political instability caused by Reconstruction efforts which favored freedmen over white men,[but also due mainly technological advances such as cotton ginning which made it easier for people outside Africato purchase human beings]
Plantation was a large, single-family, slave-based plantation owner and tenant system in the United States from the late 17th century to the early 19th century. The term "plantation" typically refers to plantations in southern Florida, but similar systems were also found in Louisiana and Georgia. The first African slaves arrived on Plantations around 1690. By 1775, there were over 1,500 slaves working on Plantations in south Florida. The largest and most prestigious of these plantations was that of Captain James Cook in Stonington Bayou near Jacksonville. The crops grown on Captain Cook's plantation produced high quality sugarcane which was shipped back to England for export. In 1821, a group of wealthy men led by Major Talbot bought the mangrove swamp east of Jacksonville for $2 million dollars. They renamed it "Lake Monroe". In 1830 they sold it to Colonel John Ditto for $135,000 dollars colonel Ditto ran one of South Florida's largest cotton plantations until his death in 1845 at age 83 years old. In 1851 he bequeathed his entire plantation including all its slaves to his son George Washington Ditto who became their new owner and manager Under George Washington Ditto's management the plantation grew rapidly into one of the most important in south Florida as he developed a unique system called sharecropping which allowed black tenants to own part or all of their crop while still living below poverty lines
