Plantation is a community in northern Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It was established in 1836 by business magnate James P. Gaines and his wife, Lucy Key West. The name was taken from the Spanish term " plantacion," meaning land grant or concession. The town grew up around the school, courthouse and other public buildings that were built on the original 1,000 acre (400 hectare) tract of land granted to Gaines by Spain. The first home in Plantation was built by Gaines' brother-in-law John Dolphus on what is now Northwest 2nd Street. When Gaines died in 1851, his widow sold all but 125 acres (50 hectares) of her husband's holdings to their son James P. Gaines III for $5 million ($87 million in 2017 dollars). After James P.'s death in 1893, the remaining land passed through several families before it became part of the current University of Miami campus boundary as part of a deal made during World War II between UM's president Franklin D. Roosevelt and then–U.S.-Mexico border governor Manuel López Mateos Jr.. Today Plantation is an upscale neighborhood located near downtown Miami
