Pinecrest is a small town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The first settler in Pinecrest was John Hickey and his family who arrived on October 15, 1839. They were followed by others over the next few years. By 1843 there were 10 families living in the town. In 1849, Orange County was created and Pinecrest became part of it. The post office moved to its current location in 1895. During World War II, Pinecrest served as a naval air station for fighter pilots from nearby Clearwater Naval Air Station (now Tampa). In 1959, Pinecrest voters passed an ordinance declaring themselves a "small city" with its own police department and fire department instead of being subject to the jurisdiction of either county or municipality. This ordinance gave rise to some confusion as both city police and fire departments are operated by Hillsborough County government; however this designation has since been clarified as City Council resolution No . 12 requires all law enforcement services provided by Hillsborough County be consolidated with those provided by Pinecrest City Police Department under one governance structure On December 3, 2006, Hurricane Charley made landfall near Clearwater Island off Clearwater Bayou redevelopment project clearing most of downtown along with much surrounding rural land including almost all homes within 2 blocks on each side of Intracoastal Waterway between St Pete Beach Boulevard/ Gulfport Boulevard junction and State Road 827 junction effective from 6:00pm until 9:00pm local time residents were ordered to leave their homes should it become necessary for emergency response purposes such as search and rescue attempts when channel conditions changed back into hurricane force winds or greater than 75 mph sustained winds
In Pinecrest, Florida, the first white settlers arrived in 1839. The town was founded by John A. Walton and his family. The Walton's were a prominent family in the early days of Pinecrest. In 1849, they donated land to build the first school in Pinecrest. The Walton School continued to operate until 1978. The town was named for John A. Walton and his wife Sarah Burchfield Walton. Mrs. Walton was born in England and immigrated to America with her parents when she was just four years old. She became a naturalized US Citizen and married John A .Walton in 1841. They moved to Florida and started a small farm near what is now known as Hartsfield-Jackson Airport after purchasing some property there from General James Hartsfield Sr.. Mrs .Walton served on the local Board of Education until her death in 1893 at the age of 86 years old; she is buried at Oakwood Cemetery next to her husband). Pinecrest grew rapidly during its early years due to its location on an important military base (Hartsfield-Jackson Airport) and its easy access to markets statewide. By1960, Pinecrest had over 1,000 residents and businesses including several large hospitals, two schools, two churches, three stores, a post office,increased residential development along State Road 15A (now Main Street), job opportunities for local farmers/manufacturers/service companies etc., as well as new shopping centers being developed throughout central Sarasota County
