Pinecrest is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It was settled in the late 1800s as a citrus orchard and now overlooks the Miami River. The estate was located on current day NW 25th Street between SR 528 and I-95. It had about 23 acres (10 hectares). In 1878, Colonel John Ligon bought land east of US 1 extending to present day NE 2nd Avenue. He named his tract "Pinecrest." By 1900 it had increased to over 138 acres (60 hectares). A post office called Pinecrest was established in 1903. At that time it included Northwest Key Biscayne which later became an independent city. In 1923, Winton Cone brought over some sugar cane from Liberia for use in making juice concentrate. He soon realized that this type of sugar cane could be used more productively for agriculture than what he could find here in America and so he imported 100 metric tons per year of sugar cane from Monterrey, Mexico until his death in 1949 whenpinecrest processed its first crops exported to countries such as Canada and Europe
