Palmetto, Florida is a census-designated place in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,854 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Palmetto is named after Major General James P. Palmetto, who served as brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. In 1868, Captain John Crespin and his men burned down a small town in what is now Palmetto to protest Reconstruction policies that favored black Americans over white ones. The first settlers in this area were Creek Indians who established camps along the St Johns River in what is today eastern Monroe County. They were followed by Seminoles who hunted and gathered plants and roots near present-day Tallahassee and western Jackson County. A group of Englishmen known as Hernando De Soto discovered what would become Tampa Bay on July 25, 1565 while exploring southwest Florida for Spain's King Ferdinand II of Naples. On October 26 of that year they gave name to this bay - "Tampa" - after their captain Alonso de Torres y Menendez (alias Don Alvaro de León). The first land grant for Pinellas County was made on November 3, 1821 to Colonel William Troup by Governor Isaac Broward. By 1825 some eighty acres (32 hectares) had been granted for plantations with only three families living on them; one family owned all the land west of Uptown Boulevard between Sanford Avenue and Bakewell Road until 1860 when it was sold to sugarcane magnate George Prentice Dorman for $2 million dollars In 1840 transient farmers from Georgia arrived at Fort Taylor near Tampa with plans to establish a colony in what would be called Spanish Town or Tampa Bay Today there are numerous historical sites around Tampa including: the old fortifications; Hillsborough Museum; State House Annex; original Native American mission site dating back 575 years known as “Stapler”s Point” located within walking distance of downtown Tampa; USS Constitution Museum aft dock where you can see uniforms worn by American sailors during World War II including Officer Candidate School cadets during WWII which took place off shore at Dunedin Naval Air Station adjacent to Navy Pier

Palmetto had a population of only 1,922 at the 2000 census but has since grown to over 6,000 residents. The largest industry in town is agriculture with corn, cotton, soybeans, rice and other crops accounting for most of its income. Today Palmetto remains an agricultural community with many small businesses that support local production as well as tourism which brings people to see some of the oldest courthouse buildings still standing in palm-lined streets or take tours of local antique stores and galleries.
