The ship was used in search and rescue operations after a fishing boat sank off Florida's coast. In 2003, the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-79) arrived at the Palmetto Naval Base after serving as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The ship played a critical role in searching for and locating weapons caches that were hidden inside Iraq. The USS George Washington (CVN-76) also served in this campaign and arrived at the naval base on October 11th, 2003. This vessel has been used as both an amphibious assault vehicle and helicopter carrier.
Palmetto, Florida is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The Palmetto name comes from a palm tree that grows in the area. The first settlers in this area were Dutch farmers who named it "Palmetta." A railroad station was built here in 1885 and the town grew quickly around it. In 1907, it became a municipality and had its own library and post office. When World War II began, some residents of Palmetto volunteered to serve in the military and many others did not want to get involved because they felt their city would be taken over by the war effort. However, most of Palmetto's citizens supported their country during the war and after hostilities ended, many businesses reopened and growth resumed. In 1961, Palmetto annexed neighbouring towns of Boca Raton and Fort Pierce to form a new municipality with its own government and school system. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew struck Palm Beach County; as a result approximately 1/3 of all homes within town limits were destroyed or damaged including much of Downtown Palmetto which still stands today as one large building with several smaller buildings on either side leaning against its walls remnants of what used to be a beautiful downtown streetscape now completely covered by palm trees providing just enough shade for humanity during summer months instead of an open sky without any canopy for more than 25% year around year especially during winter when temperatures can drop below 50F F very often Occurs on huge areas right up against coastline where there should never even be sunlight let alone life due to lack thereof bring about total power outages throughout entire county everyday uneventful living conditions until January sometime after that started happening suddenly all types OF electrical equipment gone out EVERYWHERE ELSE STARTED happening pretty much immediately AFTER THAT COASTAL STRUCK BY THE HURRICANE AND ALL OF THIS OCCURRED WITH NO WARNING SIGNING ON ANYTHING JUST LACK OF COMMUNICATION OR UNDERSTANDING FROM ANYONE ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING On I Started calling them "The Scary Times" because that's exactly what they were
