Palmetto is a small, rural town in Seminole County, Florida. It was established in 1892 and has been populated for over 100 years. The town contains a number of historical landmarks, including the Palmetto Hotel and the old courthouse. The population of Palmetto was 9,910 at the 2010 census. Palmetto is located on US Highway 1 about 20 miles east of Tampa. The town was founded by military veterans who were discharged from Fort Snelling in Minnesota after the American Civil War. They set up a trading post on the St Johns River to service their soldiers and civilians who had come down river to seek new land after being emancipated from slavery in Georgia and South Carolina. In 1892, they built the first school and organized an Episcopal church. The town became a popular tourist destination during World War II because it boasted amenities such as good fishing, golfing, swimming, and walking trails that would have been difficult or impossible to find elsewhere during wartime rationing restrictions. After the war ended, development slowed until 1980 when tract homes began to be erected along major highways near plumbing services and other developed areas that attracted people away from downtown growth rates around commercial corridors such as Hialeah Boulevard northward into Broward County (the eastern boundary of Palm Beach County). This change created stability for downtown businesses but also led to decreased foot traffic towards what had once been an attractive shopping center which had become one-dimensional with its main drag becoming busier Interstate 95 southward out of town towards Pompano Beach beyond Treasure Coast Boulevard
