Palmetto Bay is a small town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1903 by Captain John L. Palmetto and his family as Fort Pierce Naval Station on the northeast coast of Long Island Sound. In 1924, it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 709. The name "Pinellas" came from Spanish meaning "peninsula." In 1971, the City of St Petersburg annexed portions of Pinellas County and Palmetto Bay became part of that county's new city limits. As a result, the community lost its charter as an incorporated municipality and its independent status until it regained it in 1993 when it joined Pinellas County again as an unincorporated township within the city limits. According to the 2000 US Census there are now 6,993 people living in Palmetto Bayou Community Services District (PBCSD). This district provides water and sewer service to all residents within its boundaries; also manages stormwater management for various businesses within its boundaries; operates a library; provides services such as parks and recreation; social services including job training; daycare; and senior citizen assistance programs.; has mosques/mosques open to worshipers during daylight hours only and closed at night.; arts & culture programming includes art exhibitions held monthly or more often outside of school days., offers fishing trips every week other than May 1st which is Memorial Day weekend., operates two private schools: one public high school.: contains three churches:, four movie theaters:, nine grocery stores:, eleven liquor stores:, six auto dealerships:, one business park.: contains two shopping malls: one located adjacent to Interstate 4- Exit 73A on Veterans Boulevard South (Exit 58), called "Target", while another located adjacent to Interstate 4- Exit 71A on Gulf Freeway North (Exit 521)), called "Eldorado".

Palmetto Bay was founded by the Spanish in 1565 as part of a effort to control the Florida Keys. The area was originally part of what is now Miami-Dade County. In 1836, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and renamed it West Florida. The name Palmetto Bay came about because of palmetto trees that grew along the coast. In 1912, Palmetto Bay was annexed by Jacksonville and became a municipal district. On October 25, 1928, Jacksonville merged with Duval County and Palmetto Bay became a municipality again. On July 4, 1973, the municipality passed an ordinance joining Escambia County into Florida statehood. On November 3, 1990, Escambia County voted to annex Palmetto Bay into its boundaries. On December 1st 2009 Hurricane Ike made landfall on Tampa Bay Area and caused significant damage to numerous homes and businesses in Palmettos bay including many stores that closed for good after being largely destroyed or damaged during the storm surge flooding which followed immediately afterwards fromkkkkkkkkkkkkk
The Palmetto Bay area in Florida was first inhabited by the Kissimmee tribe of Native Americans. The area had been used as a hunting ground for many years and it was known for its wild horses and deer. In 1763, British forces invaded Florida, and they discovered the Kissimmee tribe living here. They were forced to leave and their land was taken over by the British government. In 1824, a group of American settlers arrived in this area and they named the region after the palmetto trees that grew near them. The settlers developed a small town here called Live Oak which remained in operation until 1951.
