New Port Richey, Florida is a town located on the coast of Florida. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of Monroe County. New Port Richey is named for Nicholas de Montresor, 2nd Duke of Normandy and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine. The town was founded in 1892 by Commodore John D. Long who built a wharf and dockyard on the then uninhabited shoreline of approximately . He named it after his patron saint, Saint Nicholas. The first post office opened in 1893. The town developed rapidly due to its location and access to shipping lanes that made it an ideal spot for coastal commerce with local fisherman providing much of the food for locals as well as exports from nearby Jacksonville and Clearwater beach towns. In 1915, New Port Richey became the capital of Monroe County when all but two counties were organized into one county under Governor David Dixon.. In 1925, oil rigs began appearing along the coasts of Gulf Coast states including Alabama and Mississippi which led to increased development around these rigs with new housing being erected as workers competed for available jobs. At this time sea level changes caused marshes between islands alongshore to fill up with salt water which impacted fishing industry negatively causing many businesses to close while people migrated inland seeking opportunities elsewhere in response to higher prices for seafood products brought about by growing demand outside the state borders.. New Port Richey is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,713 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach metropolitan area. New Port Richey was founded on December 12, 1915 by John D. Rockefeller and his partners Edwin Ludden and Augustus Saint Johns as a small port for shipping cotton from south Florida to markets in North America. In 1924 the city annexation of adjacent unincorporated areas set off a process that has resulted in New Port Richey's current size and makeup. The town was named afterPort Royal (now Portsmouth) on James Island in what is now Tampa Bay; at the time, it was one of only two points open to fur traders seeking to reach South Florida from north America through the Yucatan Peninsula. At its peak during World War II, New Port Richey had a population of 25,000 people who built large structures such as an airfield and navy shipyard. However, since then many residents have left for various reasons: high housing prices in nearby Miami; economic stagnation following Hurricane Andrew's landfall in 1992 which destroyed much of downtown; lack of available land for development near Interstate 95; and lastly sagging defense spending which has impaired morale among local businesses and made them less competitive against larger rivals such as Miami International Airport or Sun Life Financial Corporation's Fort Lauderdale headquarters complex just east of town on Sunrise Boulevard. In recent years there have been several projects spearheaded by Mayor Bill Suarez aimed at revitalizing downtown: One project includes building an art museum adjacent to City Hall that will exhibit new works by local artists every month; another includes renovating old buildings into mixed-use apartments and offices with associated retail space inside while still keeping much of their historical character; an additional project will include repairing/replacing roads around town while also creating public plaza with benches central to the area where residents can convene monthly meetings about issues facing their community or any other topic they might care about
