New Port Richey is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,602 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit New Port Richey were the Spanish in 1565 and 1502. The French also explored this area in 1669 and 1670. In 1821, Nicholas Sellers became the first white settler in what is now New Port Richey when he came from Mobile, Alabama with his family. He named his land "Newport" after his birthplace on England's Isle of Wight. In 1865, Colonel George Armstrong Cushing established Fort Myers as a Provisional military post to protect navigation on the mouth of the St Johns River against Seminole Indian attacks. In 1868, he moved Fort Myers southward to where it stands today on US-1 near Decaturville Road (later US-1A). By 1870 there were about 100 residents in New Port Richey and 2 businesses; one store and one blacksmith shop serving general commerce local and imported goods including flour from Kentucky, sugar from West Indies and molasses from Cuba Samples: Anecdotal evidence suggests that sugar was not widely exported then due to lack of refining technology.-Governor Slaton Post Office opened December 3rd 1870 with Elisha Hickman as PostmasterGeneral In 1893 an economic depression caused by low demand for cottonseed oil led to a decline in business activity throughout Duval County but especially in NewPortRichey which lost its textile industry because of increased production out of state. Banana plantation owners closed up their farms during this time while African Americans subsistence farmers eked out an existence off nearby plantations until they too went into deep poverty during World War II when largescale banana production resumed.-In 1945 Plantation owner John Hargrave sold most of his property including his slaves - ending over 200 years of slavery withinDuval County On September 25th 1954 Hurricane Andrew struck mainland Florida leaving behindï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ï¿½ïŠ—ï± hurricane ravaged communities along both coasts devastated by winds & waves up to 125 mph(185 m/s)-NewPortRicheY alone sustained damage totaling $3 million with 80% loss affecting homes, stores & churches-Pending court approval for condemnation sale plans new developers will repair & improve many areasDAVID LEWIS REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS INC.. acquired title to property formerly owned by John Hargrave on October 6th 1957 Developers had been planning to develop this land since at least 1949 when they formed David Lewis Real Estate Investments Inc., later renamed David Lewis Land Holdings Incorporated which purchased 4 parcels adjacent To US 1 just east Of Tamiami Trail From Mrs Norma White who had operated a grocery store There was no market available for these properties so they sat undeveloped until 1977 when developer Bob Vander Plank leased them back To David Lewis Land Holdings Incorporated which developed them into one large tract home builder has since built over 100 homes hereincluding some very high end models
New Port Richey was founded in 1892 by Captain John A. Ellis and his wife Anne as a citrus fruit packing and shipping center on the Kissimmee River. The city was named after its original owner, Colonel George F. Newcomer of Jacksonville, Florida who donated land for the town's location. The Old Port at the mouth of the Kissimmee River had been used by Native American traders for centuries before European colonists established Illionois Fort Moultrie in 1763 to contest English control over this area. In 1892, Ellis built a wharf on the river's edge and in 1907 he opened a port for goods destined for Cuba, Puerto Rico, and other parts of Latin America. In 1911, Newport News Shipbuilding Company became one of first companies in United States to build submarines and submersibles under contract from World War I allies France and Great Britain. By 1923-24 Newport News had become one of largest submarine builders in world with 45 vessels constructed at its shipyard alone during that period In 1935-36 Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Tallahassee as an intense Category 5 storm which left much damage; New Port Richey fared better with only two homes damaged or destroyed but many businesses were damaged or lost their contents After World War II ended there was significant growth in fishing industry followed by suburban development until more recently when the city experienced significant decline due to automation, population growth outside of town (led by Palm Beach County), developers' preference for sprawl over agriculture/land use within town limits (leading to increased traffic congestion), environmental impact from oil well developments along waterfronts
