The Miami-Dade Naval Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company was founded in 1909 as the Miami Navy Yard. It became a subsidiary of the United States Navy in 1921, and then merged with the Bureau of Ships in 1938 to become the U.S. Navy's Miami Naval Shipyard. In 1946, it was renamed the Miami Marine Terminal Corporation, and finally, the Miami-Dade Naval Shipyard when it became part of NASA's Space Shuttle program in 1978. Miami is a city located on the southern coast of Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 813, dolphins and humans have been living in this area for over 3000 years. The name Miami comes from Miamis Creek which means "milk- river." The first European to visit the area was Giovanni Ponce de Leon who called it Ciego de Leon after his night journey along the Gulf of Mexico in 1513. People were living here long before Europeans arrived. In 1693, Captain Juan Pablo Menchaca landed on what is now Monroe County and named it Santiago del Castillo after St. Philip Neri (1494–1566), a Dominican friar who had visited South America twice and then evangelized in that region. Spanish colonists landed in what is now Miami in 1821 and founded Aparicio Station near present day Wynwood Avenue and NE 3rd Street which became known as Aparicio Point because its location offered commanding views of Fort Lauderdale and the Atlantic Ocean. The first African American to live in Miami was Solomon ibn Ghanima who came to work at Aparicio Station with his white employer, James Troup Jr., on November 6, 1892. He later moved to Overtown where he owned and operated a store until 1902 when he sold his business to John Hallyday for $500 dollars cash plus five thousand acres of land including today's Overtown neighborhood. On December 5th, 1904, Booker T Washington walked from Key Biscayne Boulevard north across Dixie Highway into downtown Miami for an inaugural meeting of Urban League of Greater Miami which was also attended by Cuban leader Fidel Castro. This event marks the beginning of black political power in Miami as well as Broward County proper with respect to education, employment opportunities etc... It should be noted that although Washington was not originally from or associated with both areas - downtownMiami/DowntownAquila & Overtown - they are both considered "historic" neighborhoods within their respective communities due to their connection with important historical moments/events.... For more than 50 years following these landmark events throughout DowntownMiami & Overtown - many successful African American businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Joe's Pizza, Waffle House et al...have grown up around these areas!!!

In 1847, Spanish American War veteran José Martí landed in Miami on a ship called "La Paz" and began to preach revolutionary Christianity. After his sermon, people from Miami started coming to live and work in Havana during the war. In 1904, Dr. Jameson Denton discovered oil near Miami and decided to invest in it. The first rig drilled for oil in Florida was at Perrine beach on October 25, 1907. The Perrine Beach Oil Field was later named after Dr. Denton's father-in-law who had purchased it from the heirs of Captain John Harkness. Miami football team: In 1926, University of Michigan coach Fielding H. Yost moved his Wolverines from Ann Arbor to Miami and led them to their first national championship game against Nebraska in two years (1926).
