Miami Shores is a small town located in Miami Dade County, Florida. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was established in 1892 by settlers from New York and originally called Key Biscayne. In 1911, it was renamed to Miami Shores after its location on the shores of Lakemonroe. In 1954, Hurricane Wilma moved the area off of its original alignment and made it an island within Miami Dade County. In 1965, Miami Shores became a city when it annexed part ofFort Lauderdale. The annexation brought civic resources such as police officers and fire departments to the town which had been without such amenities for years before that point. After many years of growth and development, the city limits were expanded in 2004 to include all of Plantation Key except for a few blocks near Kendall Beach Boulevard which are still administered by Fort Lauderdale City government because they fall within municipal boundaries but have full city rights including water supply, zoning and elected officials

Miami Shores, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is the county seat of Miami-Dade County. The town was founded on November 3, 1881 by John Fenton and named after Shores Point on Biscayne Bay. The first residents of Miami Shores were Portuguese fishermen who sailed to Key West from Fort Caroline in 1795 looking for seafood resources. In 1881, John Fenton purchased land atShores Point from two Spanish settlers and founded the community. He named it after his homeport of Lisboa in Portugal where he had been born in 1837. Over time, other citizens donated land to form Streetsboro Park and other areas within the current boundaries of Miami Shores. The first post office opened in May 1886 and was called "Aurora". When annexation by Dade County happened in 1907, "Aurora" became "Miami Shores". From that point forward until 1959 when it merged with neighboring Monroe Beach into Dade City, there were three post offices serving both communities: "Aurora", "Miami Shores", and "Monroe Beach". The merger resulted in an increase in mail volume as people continued to move into those municipalities during that time period; however due to its close proximity to Dade City (which doubled as the county seat) services began to be delivered through Dade City's new consolidated government building which also served as courthouse and jail during this time period

The town was originally called "Hollywood" because of the many movies that were shot there during the silent era. In 1957, Miami Shores became a community with its own school system and police force.
