Miami Shores is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The community was founded as a small fishing village by settlers from Mobile, Alabama in 1887. In 1932, it became the first incorporated municipality in Miami-Dade County and remained so until its incorporation into the city of Miami in 2003. The name "Shores" comes from the sound that shrimp make when they are caught onshore ( hence Shrimp Shoals). By 1888,shrimpers had discovered that if they shuck their catch early during low tide then their bait would come up with less water and thus be more likely to stay on shore for future catches; this technique is still used today. The first house was built in what is now known as Main Street in 1887 by J P Hinchcliffe and his son John. In 1930 Shores had a population of 10 people and only one grocery store which served local fishermen and their families until 1959 when it opened its current location on Northwest First Avenue near South Key Biscayne Boulevard. In 1932, Shores became an incorporated municipality with its own government after voters approved an amendment to the City Charter providing for such an entity within municipal boundaries. Incorporation brought new challenges including but not limited to: having to file taxes, creating fire departments etc., all while striving to maintain close relationship with the City of Miami which saw many benefits from sisterhoods formed among municipalities across Southeast Florida. Despite these challenges - and some that remain today - Shores has successfully responded by becoming one ofSouthwest Florida's most vibrant communities with both commercial and residential development complementing each other while also catering to needs specific to its residents - whether those being hunters or fisherman enjoying good public schools or retirees who want easy access to shopping opportunities nearby without leaving their home base (the town limits). In 2017 Hurricane Irma devastated parts of South Florida including much of Southwest Florida making recovery difficult but not impossible; however due largely to donations collected through various organizations such as Red Cross Surfside Rescue Team & American Red Cross Greater Naples Relief Fund both levels have reopened giving hope for returning residents along With tourism numbers booming since Irma made landfall many businesses have reopened too!
