The MiamiShores Airport was opened in November, 1927. At that time, it served as the only airport in Miami-Dade County. The airport has since grown to include a nearly 350-acre complex that houses both public and private aviation resources. In honor of its history and role in the community, the Miami Shores Airport Authority has established the Air Force Gift History Museum which features artifacts from the United States Air Force’s history at MIA. This museum is open to the public every Saturday from 10am – 4pm during normal operating hours. Admission is free for all visitors.

The 355th Bomb Squadron Museum is located adjacent to NAS Miami Shores today and preserves the history of this unit as well as other USAF units that flew from NAS Miami Shores during World War II and the Cold War era.

On Dec. 12, 1947, the United States Air Force announced a gift of $1 million to the Joint Chiefs of Staff in honor of their wartime service. The donation was made in order to help defray the costs associated with aircrew funerals and other military funerals.
