However, during that time period Longwood experienced some growth as new homes were constructed and businesses began to open up again including a grocery store and one of America's first drive-in restaurants - Carl's Jr.- which reopened after being closed for many years due to fire code violations In recent decades, Longwood has seen an increase in interest from people looking to retire or move closer to family members who live in nearby Jacksonville or Orlando. As more people are choosing to live here rather than commute long distances each day, infrastructure needs have also begunto become more cramped with less room for expansion-. This has led to proposals by various governmental entities (including state governments)to annex portions of Longwood throughout history but no action has yet been taken Today, Longwood is home to a variety of businesses such as two hospitals (Jacksonville Medical Center & Orange Coast Healthcare), two banks (BancorpSouthwest Florida & First American Bank), four schools (USD 285 – Dunnellon High School & USD 298 – Willowbrook Middle/High School), three churches (Church of Christ /Methodist Episcopal; Ascension Lutheran Church; Baptist Bible Chapel) as well as numerous private residences including Villa Leonore which overlooks Interstate 95 between Jacksonville and Orlando Additionally, there are now plans underway for a new elementary school - USHCA Manor Elementary School - which will be located adjacent to both Tennis Lakes Recreation Area west of town center while another elementary school - Atlantic Christian Academy - will be built adjacent to Village Park east of town center . All told, these projects should result in an additional 1 ,500+ residents moving into town over the next few years

Longwood, Florida is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,156 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1881 by white settlers and named for Nicholas Longwood, an early settler. It became a city in 1961. The first European to visit Longwood was Captain John Smith on his ill-fated 1620 voyage from England to North America. He landed on the north coast of Miami Beach on December 12, 1509/10 and explored the area that would become Longwood. A few days later he met Indian Chief Oconee who told him about "a great place" west of Miami where he could find water and trade goods with the natives. In 1767 Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered what would become Duval County while exploringFlorida's Panhandle region; his expedition named it Santa Fé de La Vega after San Francisco de Asís which he had sighted on his way south from Havana NL., Cuba (then part of Spain). In 1768 Major José Ríos y Rodriguez located Stonington Key east of Tampa Bay on the Safety Islands off Tampa Bay and name the key Santa Rosa because of its abundance of red fir trees - Red Fir is another name for White Pine (Pinus radiata) a species found only in North America hereabouts). At that time there were no homes or settlements within this area so when Ríos y Rodriguez returned home IGLV all Saints’ Parish erected a cross near this spot bearing his arms as recorded below: "Nova Sancti Spiritus nostri Lordi Fratres Xaverii Centuriis Nominatum Monumentum". On November 25th 1768 Father José Romo arrived back at Ensenada Galveston Mexico City SVXQR from present day Pensacola FL with news that Pedro Menreque had been killed by Indians along lower Mobile Bayou four leagues due east from Stonington Key December 4th 1700 AGO." So although these dates are not certain they most likely happened between October 25th-November 25th 1768 because Father José Romo's return trip crossed overland fromTampaBaytoMexicoCityinaboutthesamedayandbecausePedro Menrequewas KilledbyIndiansalonglowerMobileBayoufourleaguesofaastfromStoningtonKeyDecember4TH00AGO." In 1836, Longwood was founded by Captain Elijah Parish and his wife Eliza. The original house on the current site of the town was built in 1793. A courthouse was built in 1848 and a jail in 1861. In 1865, Longwood became a city and consolidated with nearby Pinellas County.
