The name "Leesburg" was derived from Indian word "leseburgh," meaning "place of plenty." The first permanent settler in Leesburg was John Fenton, who arrived in 1798. Rockefeller and his brother William bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land at what is now Leesburg for $2,000; they named it Inverness Park after their father-in-law David Rockefeller Sr.'s estate in New York City. In 1821 George Washington Key went to Leesburg with plans to build a plantation on the east coast of Long Island Sound but abandoned them when he learned that sugarcane would not be grown there easily enough to support a large population. A few years later Henry Flagler purchased 1,600 acres (534 hectares) east of Lighthouse Point on Stonington Bayou from James Kapp and put it into production as Jacksonville Park cane country; he named it after himself—Jupiter Key—but by 1846 it had become known as Jacksonville Plantation because most of the acreage had been sold off to other producers since Key's day. After Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of Jacksonville Plantation in 1992, the remaining sections were donated to the city for use as open space including an experimental organic farm and botanical garden called Jacksonville Gardens which opened in 2003 adjacent to Fort Lauderdale State College/Jacksonville University campus.) In 1903 Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney acquired 2,500 acres (1 km²) southwest of present-day downtown Leesburg from her father Alfred Vanderbilt II for $25 million dollars and renamed it Belleair Estate; she built two enormous homes there: one called Vanderbilt Manor and another called Whitney Bayou House which still stands today within walking distance of each other on Belleair Drive across from Belleair Country Club).
