Leesburg, Florida is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Leesburg is known for its beaches and historical landmarks such as Fort Hill Park and Lee Street Presbyterian Church. The area that now Leesburg was first populated by Native American Seminoles who lived on the Apalachicola River. In 1821, General James K. Polk led an expedition through Brevard County to survey the area for a military post against Seminole threats from eastward. The name "Leesburg" comes from Indian word meaning "place where sweet corn is grown." The first white person to live in Leesburg was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1763. At that time it was just a place near what is now Port St Lucie. In 1838, Captain George Swain built his home on present day SW corner of Main Street and 3rd Avenue. He named it "Galloway's Landing". In 1892, J.P. Morgan bought land east of Leesburg and founded what became Sunoco Logistics Company which later merged with ExxonMobil to become BP Capital Plc.. Leesburg residents voted in November 1992 to make their town an incorporated municipality with its own government which they did by ordinance on December 2nd, 1992. As part of this incorporation process they elected Mayor Rick Kemp as their first mayor with term beginning February 1st 1993 until May 15th 1999 when he stepped down due to term limits set by the Lee County Board of Commissioners
