Leesburg is a small town in the Miami-Dade County, Florida metropolitan area. The population was 39,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade micropolitan statistical area. Leesburg was founded on December 9, 1892 by Fayetteville and Washington counties commissioners as a result of an agreement between them to share a post office. Leesburg's first store opened in 1895. A post office was established here on November 25, 1897 and named for General James Hance Lees, who served with distinction in the Mexican–American War and as commander of Fort Brooke on Cape Coral Harbour. The community grew rapidly due to its location near Interstate 75 and the Panama Canal Zone; it had more than 100 residents by 1915. In 1923, Leesburg became one of two towns in Miami-Dade County to have their own water system; this resulted in an increase in development around the town center including new homes, churches and businesses. By 1955, Leesburg had grown into a small city with over 4400 residents. In 1961, Leesburger salesman Donnie Neuman successfully campaigned for county commission seat against incumbent Floyd D'Avino; he won handily with over 60% of the vote instead of D'Avino's 38%. In 1970s deregulation caused a sharp decrease in manufacturing jobs throughout much of Florida but not so much in Leesburgh which continued to prosper thanks to its strong education sector (particularly correspondence schools).
