A Brief History of Maga Coffee Maga coffee is a type of Colombian coffee that originated in the village of La Malla, located in the Department of Meta, Colombia. The beans are grown on small farms near the Andes Mountains and are roasted by hand. The first mention of maga coffee was in 1611 when Don Francisco de Paula y Uribe wrote about a type of coffee called "casa blanca" which he said was grown near Cartagena. In 1795, José Antonio Meirelles published an article on bean varieties and noted that there were two types of maga beans; one from the village of La Malla and another from Thatará. He also mentioned that these beans were ground into a smoothie drink known as "maga". In 1875, Roberto Núñez Peña brought some maga beans to Santa Fe, New Mexico where he started selling them under the name "Coca Cola de México." This store is considered to be the beginning of supermarket shopping in Mexico City. From here, maga coffee spread to other parts of Latin America and eventually reached Europe. In 1928, Alberto Fernández Hernández marketing director for Coca-Cola imported some million pounds (1 million kilos)of Colombian maga beans with the hope they would make their way back home to Colombia where they grew wild. They did not however; this Eventually led to Banco de Crédito Agrícolas Colombiano taking over production from Coca-Cola in 1958. In 1968, Magna Carta Coffee merged with Dutch conglomerate Philips Petroleum & Banking NV forming Transvaal Breweries NV which became part of Nestle SA in 2001. Magna Carta Coffee now produces more than 240 different blends bothroasted and instantaneously processed coffees under three corporate brands: Den Haag - Dutch roast; Brugge - Belgian roast; Spanish Roasts - Nicaraguan roasts).
