Lakeland, Florida is a city located in the US state of Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,353. The city is named after Lakeland County, which straddles both sides of the country as well as its namesake buttes. Founded on November 1, 1873 by James K. Polk and his brother John C. Polk as a town in Seminole County, it became an incorporated city on February 15, 1907. It was again annexed by Jacksonville on December 12th of that year and currently shares borders with Jacksonville to the east and west while its sister cities are Fort Pierce to the north and West Palm Beach to the south. Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,164 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County and the largest city in Florida. The name "Lakeland" was given to it by General James K. Polk in 1845 for his land grant of 287 acres (129 hectares).
