Lake Mary is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The name comes from the Seminole word "mary," meaning "small creek." The first settler in Lake Mary was James A. Cook in 1853. The population of Lake Mary peaked at 3,000 in 1920 and has since decreased to 1,500 people. Lake Mary is located on the eastern edge of the Everglades National Park and was designated a national park by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on November 16, 1935. As part of the National Park Service Act of 1916, Congress authorized the erection of a United States Army post at lakeMary for storage and recreational use by troops stationed at Fort Brooke on mainland Florida. The site for the post was chosen because it offered good opportunities to fish for catfish and largemouth bass as well as provide cover from possible French gunboats that patrolled the area during World War I. In 1924, Ulysses S. Grant donated land to form what would become Everglades National Park; however, no military posts were built on it until 1935 when Fort Brooke was established adjacent to present day Lake Mary proper. In 1934-1935, construction began on an army barracks which became known as Camp Grant after General George Custer's death in battle near modern day Tuskegee University some 350 miles away in Alabama; Camp Grant served as headquarters for American Forces Central Command during World War II before being transferred to Northwest Field Force Headquarters within USAREUR following the war's end. Yearly events such as carnivals and dog Shows are still popular here today with many families coming together to enjoy all that this region has to offer!
