The United States Army Garrison at Lake Mary was established in 1866. The original garrison consisted of a single company of Infantry, commanded by Major General George H. Thomas. In 1901, the USAGM transferred to Fort Myers and in 1907, it moved to Kissimmee. In 1924, the USAGM relocated again to Fort Meade and then into Tampa in 1937. The last military forces stationed at Lake Mary were withdrawn from active duty on September 15th, 1999 and all remaining property was turned over to the City of Kissimmee for use as a parkland. In 1952, the Florida National Guard activated at Fort Myers as part of the Military Defense Forces for South Florida under Republic Act No. 9252 which authorized establishment of a national guard unit in that State specifically for law enforcement purposes within Miami-Dade County. On November 1st, 1960 Florida National Guard Troops Combat Unit 3rd Regiment (Mechanized) arrived at Fort Myers and redesignated as Company E - 1/2 U S A Aircrew Battalion . Company E - 1/2 U S A Aircrew Battalion relinquished its arms on December 12th 1961 when its members were redesignated as Air Traffic Control Officers with Headquarters Squadron 7A Air Traffic Control Wing (Aircraft Maintenance Command). On October 14th 1965 these officers detachment became Company G - 2/5 U S A Rangers assigned toorganic command elements Aviation Section 513 Light Helicopter Squadron 3591 Alpha Tactical Air Command flying “Tropical Storm Lady” mission during Hurricane Forster . On June 6th 1969 Orange County Sheriff Bill Lee ordered all law enforcement agencies throughout Central Floridas activated pursuant to section 8-3-120 Statute governing state defense against invasion or insurrection etc.. This order activation created an almost unbridgeable chasm between Sheriff’s Department functions within Orange County and those exercised by county sheriff’s deputies located outside that county limits. After conferring with his superior officer Lieutenant Colonel Fitzhugh Ladd he determined that conversion of departmental resources into military personnel would result in excessive duplication of effort and potential loss of life or other critical assets essential to law enforcement effectiveness both inside and outside rural areas subject to annexation by adjacent counties; therefore ,he recommended curtailment or abandonment of this program effective immediately upon receipt of this message through Regular channels…. On July 25th 1970 Captain James Worthy relieved First Lieutenant Don Lane as commanding officer Company G – 2/5 U S A Rangers effective August 15th 1970 after serving out his full three year term ending September 30th 1971…..Captain Worthy also ordered changes in command organization for both Companies Ranger HQ &Company I HQ effective October 15nd 1970 consisting now onlyof Lieutenants Colonels James Worthy &Don Lane respectively…….....After ordaining new Commanding Officers Lt Col Fitzhugh Ladd assumed operational control from Captains James Worthy &Worthyrespectively……...Lt Col Fitzhugh Ladd directed Organizational Changes for both Companies Ranger HQ &Company I HQ continuing until May 31st 1971 when he relieved Captain James Worthy……………When Major General Nelson Wolff took command of army post area on May 1st 1973 he reorganized units thereunder replacing most Enlisted Men with commissioned officers……………Under Maj Gen Wolff commander Training Force increased from battalion size downto troop level while Armor force remained static due To severe budget deficiencies…………….Troop reductions occurred during 1974 thru 1977 due To manpower shortages resultant from Vietnam War draft surrenders……….Unit strength stabilized at about 175 troops following withdrawal from Vietnam….. since 1978 unit has grown slightly(estimated 180 troops) Withdrawn personnel have been replaced by Reserve components………….. currently there are about 205 uniformed enlisted men plus an unknown number civilian employees.........................Army Garrison History: At first fort Meade was just a small outpost manned by soldiers from Ft Myers waiting orders from headquarters back home In 1897 when America acquired Guam we needed someone here so our Marines could help clean up after our victory over Spanish Marines And so we got ridof our Marine detachment An act which served us well ever since Weve had different companies deployed here every few years ever since dependant on what's happening overseas What began as simple garrison duties quickly evolved into something more When World War II started things got really hairy because we didn't know how much Japanese submarines were sneaking around so we started building some serious defenses It wasn't easy but it paid off because Japan didn't attack us until Pearl Harbor So MacArthur called us together And said look no further We've got this thing under control now And From then on things went pretty good We even sent troops into Korea without any problems Only problem was that they came backAnd thats when things started getting really hairy Because after Korea we found out Japan had built some really big warships And so instead Of using our own shipsTo patrol our waters They invited American Ships Over To Japan Soceansweres constantly being contested By These Naval ArmiesNowadaysLake Mary is still housing American Soldiers But their job description has changed quite alot Since World War II Nowadays they're mostly used For training Nowadays most Of Our Park Is dedicated To The Memory Of Those Who Served Here Before Us Army Garrison History: Although LakeMary is now part OFFortMeadeUSAGarrisonIt retains many features associated with its past including gunslingers playing tag near the river closebyon hot days Or servicemen giving toursOf Missile SitesToday's visitors can see relics ranging FROM cannons dating backTo Revolutionary War TO Today's Mp3 Players Russians deploy Spetsnaz Units IntoFloridaFor comments contact Sgt Lorenz Castillo email lcastillo@cox.net

Lake Mary, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Lake Mary, a major reservoir formed by an artificial dam and wall constructed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to control flooding during hurricanes. The town was named after General John C. Brevard, who fought in the Seminole Wars and led American forces against Seminoles in 1838-39. Lake Mary is located at (30.966667,-81.027667). As of the 2000 census, its population was 1,708 people and it has since shrunk to 811 residents as a result of loss of jobs from Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and other causes over the past few years. The community started as a railroad stop on Florida's A1A road about two miles east of present-day Lake Mary when it became available for development after construction of Interstate 95 bypassed Polk County in 1924. The first store opened there in 1927 and post office service began operations that year also serving as a telephone exchange until 1959 when all phone services were transferred to Tampa thereafter. As part of state highway improvement projects during World War II contractor Jardine & Easterman built two additional high-level crossings at Estero Creek Bridge (now called US-27) west of town and Pee Dee River Bridge northwest of town which linked with I-95 through Alachua County to allow troops arriving or departing from Fort Pierce Naval Air Station or Fort Myers Naval Air Station to cross without fear that they would be captured by Japanese forces operating within mainland Florida during World War II; these crossings remain extant today as tourist attractions open to vehicular traffic only with no pedestrian access allowed except for day use by memberships organizations authorized by state Legislature/Governor who have paid fees entitling them above normal traffic rates on these bridges which are also open seasonally for pedestrians only during nonpeak hours between 9am and 4pm weekdays excluding holidays). Accordingly much local development took place outside what is now downtown Lake Mary due largely to developments along I-95 southbound following World War II military activity including: Beechwood Hills subdivision off US 27 northeast corner into Polk County established just before war’s end 1945; Clermont Drive originally developed adjacent to fortifications near mouth of Estero Creek near present day intersection with US 27 close UF campus area southwest corner LakeMary Boulevard presence herein continuing until well into early 1960s following purchase/leased lands adjacent thereto from army Corp.; many new homes were built along Atwater Avenue corridor extending northeasterly out into unincorporated county beginning about late 1950s concurrent with overall growth in this corridor paralleling interstate route throughout entire decade; majority residences still extant 5 miles northwesterly along long side edge Of lakeMary Blvd., bordering Clearwater Bayou nearlyto its mouth
