The Jupiter, Florida Army National Guard was organized on December 12, 1942. The Guard was originally constituted as a regiment of the Florida National Guardsmen. On January 1, 1943, the Regiment became an organic part of the United States Armed Forces and was redesignated as the Jacksonville-based 5th Infantry Division. The division served in World War II in support of the Allied forces and later fought in Korea. After the war ended, the division returned to Jacksonville and resumed its peacetime role until it was mobilized for Operation Neptune's Spear during Desert Storm in 1991. On September 10, 1992, elements of the 5th Infantry Division were activated at Fort Bragg to provide artillery support for US troops fighting against Iraqi forces in Kuwait. The brigade remained active through most of operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm and subsequent deployments to Bosnia Herzegovina (Operation Joint Endeavor) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom). In 2006, elements from brigade based at Fort Dix were redeployed to Naples Italy where they provided artillery fire support for UNIFIL during Operation Unified Protector.On October 15, 2007 elements from brigade based at Ft Lewis joined forces with other brigades from all three service branches to form Task Force Hammer which provided logistical support for Operation Neptune's Spear - an operation that destroyed two major dams on Lake Tohopee near Baghdad. Following this effort a Brigade sized detachment deployed en masse to Afghanistan as part of Multi-National Force–Afghanistan (MNF-A) providing security for American contractors working on reconstruction projects In 2009 independently elements disbanded their command structure and reassigned their members back home with orders to prepare for possible deployment in response to Hurricane Andrew which struck central Florida on August 28th

Jupiter, Florida is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded by English colonists in 1821 as a trading post on the St. Johns River. The name comes from Jupiter Hill, which stands near the present-day town line between Jupiter and Monroe Counties. By 1886, the post office had been moved to what is now downtown Jupiter and it continued to be called that until 1963 when it changed its name to honor Ulysses S. Grant III., who served as President of the United States from 1865-1869 and again from 1877-1881. In 1963, Grantsville took over as the official name for downtown Jupiter and it remains that today. One of Jeb Bush's ancestors was born in Jupiter in 1755 and he became governor of Florida in 1978 after being elected Senator from Miami-Dade County (then Broward County). Bush also has two brothers who were governors: former Governor Jeb Bush I (1998-2002) and current Governor George W. Bush (2006-2008).

Jupiter, Florida was founded in 1835 by Capt. John Smith and his wife Elizabeth. The first permanent settler in Jupiter was Elisha Swayne, who built a small cabin on the now- disappeared Lucerne Canal. In 1839, Jettus Morse moved from Ohio to Jacksonville and purchased land near what is now Jupiter Boulevard. He named the land after his father, Job Morse. In 1843, James Waring arrived in Jupiter from New York and platted the town of Jupiter on the east side of Blake Street about one mile south of present day University Boulevard. Waring sold his holdings in Jupiter to George Stephenson in 1865 for $2,500. Stephensons heirs operated the town until it was annexed by Jacksonville in 1898. A post office was established at Jupiter in 1840; it remained in operation until 1918. The first school at Jupiter opened its doors on October 1, 1841; it later became Jacksonville State College and then Jacksonville State University (now University). That same year, Captain Smith's widow died and he married her sister Jane Cushingworths daughter of Colchester Cushingworths owner of two plantations near Pensacola Bayou. They had six children: John Fenton Smith (1845-1925), Mary Lyon Smith (1848-1927), Franklin Dixie Smith (1850-1937), Julia Anna Benson (1853-1924), Eleanor Isabelle Eaton Holmes (1855-1945) and Clarence Augustus Eaton Holmes II (1859-1944). One son only survived infancy - Franklin Dixie Smith - who acquired a large estate just north of Gainesville that included much valuable agricultural acreage as well as a manor house known as "The White House."
