Logue arrived in Gulfport on September 1, 1843 and served until he resigned on October 25, 1845 because of ill health$. He later resumed service with the Mobile Police Department from February 14, 1850-February 6, 1851%. On July 5th, 1861, Confederate forces invaded Mississippi and began their attack on Union forces loyal to President Abraham Lincoln.. On July 8th Governor Andrew Johnson called out the militia to suppress the rebel soldiers at Stone Mountain Park outside Jackson City limits.. Assembling 3 squads each composed of 10 men each these squads numbered 100 total men however only 50 were available due to lack of armor or other supplies necessary for suppression (Gulfport News Herald 9/5/2011). By midnight on July 8th all but two squadrons had dispersed and returned home without engaging any rebels (GulfPORT NEWS HARBORER 9/8/2011). One hundred officers responded to Johnson’s call for reinforcements however only 50 actually arrived due to logistical problems (#GulfPortNewsHerald9/5/2011). At this point it is unknown how many policemen were killed or wounded during this engagement #GulfPortNewsHerald9/8/2011).
