Gulfport is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–M68 Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of Gulfport were two Native American groups: the Menominee and Ottawa. In 1810, Captain John Dickey explored the area and named it after his home port of Mobile Bay, Alabama. A post office was established at Gulfport in 1836, and by 1840 there were over 100 residents. In 1846, land was donated by J. P. Morgan to be used for a new county seat; Gulfport received its charter on November 3 that year. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewing's forces burned down most of downtown Gulfport with cannons and firebrands as part of an artillery barrage against Union forces entrenched near Fort Snelling. The blast destroyed nearly all downtown buildings save one—the old courthouse which still stands today (). After the war ended in 1865, many soldiers from both sides settled in Gulfport and founded businesses including shipbuilding and lumbering operations. During World War II, many munitions plants were built in or around Gulfport; although not all turned into successful businesses like those before it did during peacetime when goods could be shipped directly to consumers without going through ports such as New Orleans or Norfolk (nor did they suffer much bombing). The USS "Mississippi" sunk offshore on September 12 1942 while anchored offshore enroute to Kuwait carrying oil supplies; her crew lost their lives but more than 200 Marines died from injuries sustained in the sinking as well as 1% of US Naval fatalities during World War II overall- making it one of deadliest naval accidents ever
