The Fort Walton Beach Coffee Company was founded in 1928 by the late J.B. 'Buzz' Bissonnette and his wife, Alma. Buzz purchased a small coffee plantation near Fort Walton Beach and began to produce traditional Colombian style coffee. The first beans were ground in Buzz's family home on Indian River Boulevard. In 1949, Buzz passed away and his wife continued to operate the company until her death in 1998. The company produced about 2,500 pounds of coffee per week when it began production, and today their beans are distributed throughout the Florida area.

In 1836, Indian Wars began between Seminoles and Umatillas over control of tracts along Pensacola Bay including present-day Fort Walton Beach. By 1840 only a few hundred Seminole remained living in what is now Ft Walton Beach while most had dispersed throughout Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Cuba and other parts of South America by then. The area around Ft Walton Beach came under military control when US General James Wilkinson established a military fort there in 1837 during American Indian War #2 after general Tecumseh's failed attempt to drive out US forces from easternFloridaheadquartered at Tampa Bay via Lake Okeechobee into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). Wilkinson renamed it "Fort Walton" in honor of General Wilkinson's father-in-law who also fought for America against British forces during the Revolutionary War who later served as Governor Court House (and later Secretary at War).
