The Fort Walton Beach Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War II. The unit was mobilized in 1943 and fought in the Battle of Okinawa. In 1945, the Fort Walton Beach Armory was built and became home to the Florida Guard's 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment (Airmobile). The battalion served as an infantry brigade combat team during the Vietnam War. After more than 50 years of service, the 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment (Airmobile) is now being disbanded and its personnel are being combined with other units to form a new regiment called the 3rd Brigade Combat Team (Airmobile). The 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment (Airmobile) was originally organized on September 16, 1942 at Ft. Walton Beach by Captain Harry Tilton Jr., commanding officer of Company A of 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment. On October 15, 1942 Company B of 2nd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment was organized at Ft. Walton Beach and Companies C-1 through D were formed from elements of Companies A and B on November 8, 1942 at Ft. Walton Beach under command of Lieutenant Colonel Edward Flanders. Headquarters for both battalions were located at Ft. Walton Beach until May 1944 when they moved to Green Acres Army Airfield where they remained until December 1945 when they returned to Ft. Walton Beach as part of Task Force European Command's occupation forces after Japan surrendered unconditionally on September 2, 1945 On January 17, 1951 Major General Sidney Jaffe relieved Major General George Haggerty as commanding general of Florida Guard District No 5 which included Fort Walton beach On October 15 1960 Majors John Ladd(now Retired), Vernon Gentry(now Retired), Don Harbison(now deceased), Bud Bechtel(now deceased) assumed command over all companies within District 5 including 1/9 FC who had been operating outof Homestead Air Force Base since early 1948 Captain Harry Tilton Jr.(later Lieutenant Colonel Edward Flanders) assumed command over 1/9 FC from Captain John Ladd effective January 17 1961 1/9 FC deployed overseas with Operation Desert Storm on February 14 - April 6 1991 while ground troops supported by Navy jets provided air support

The Fort Walton Beach, Florida army gift history begins with the arrival of the United States Army in 1814. The fort was built to protect the town from Seminole Indians and was later upgraded to a military post. In 1875, it became part of the Florida Military District and in 1907 it became part of the Department of Defense.
Fort Walton Beach is a town in Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,292 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Fort Walton Beach were Spanish explorers who sailed past it in 1559 on their way to Cuba. In 1694 Englishman James Smith explored and named the cape after George Washington's father-in-law, Colonel John Walton. In 1795 Captain James Cook discovered Pensacola Bay and set up a trading post there called Fort Walton Beach which he named for his wife's father, General James Walton (1685–1754). In 1814 Major General Andrew Pickens built a fortified landing here for British forces under Major General Arthur Pope during their attempt to invade Florida from Mexico. On December 12th of that year American Commodore John Foust captured Pensacola Bay and renamed it Fort Walton Beach after himself as part of his victory over Admiral Thomas Hatteras off Cape Stono in October 1814. In 1821 Captain David Moody began construction of what would become the first permanent white US military installation in what is now Florida when he erected a battery on Point Lookout Hill opposite today's beachfront restaurant complex called "Moody's Battery" (named for him). The fort served as an artillery target during Seminole Wars against Native Americans until its abandonment in 1898 due to lack of appropriations by Congress. A lighthouse was built at Point Lookout in 1822 by Ralph Waldo Emerson with assistance from Lieutenant Augustus Kane but it burned down in 1895. A new lighthouse was constructed at present day Fort Walton Beach by Jules Verne and opened on May 1st, 1897; however, it also burned down three years later while serving as operational headquarters for Miami’s 24th Infantry Regiment during World War I before finally being replaced by an automated facility which still stands today beside current day Ft Walton Beach Boulevard just south of Interstate 95 exit 233B/US 41 exit 278A/SR 308E) . Fort Walton Beach became an incorporated town on January 3rd 1907 following passage of the Floridas Local government law No 1 of 1907 which limited county governments within limits prescribed by state constitutional amendment ratified two years earlier providing: “that no city or other public improvement may be established within any limits hereafter prescribed either by this Constitution or any act done therein…No person shall erect or maintain any building…within five miles [8 km] square [of] any schoolhouse….except such as may be authorized by this Constitution” . On November 11th 1912 local voters approved annexation into Jacksonville pending final approval from Jacksonville City Council because they felt that Fort Walton should have been included within Jacksonville since it had long been considered one of its most important commercial areas with significant agricultural acreage along both sides of Biscayne Boulevard between A1A Exits 9A & 9B/ SR 727 exits 1 & 2) . In 1933 local voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation into Everglades National Park effective February 15th 1934 after passage of An Act To establish Everglades National Park...and For other Purposes And authorizes The President Of The United States To Make All proper Provision Therefor (renamed Broward National Forest effective April 6th 1933)).
