The Fort Walton Beach Air Force Base has been a part of the United States military since 1947. It is one of two airfields in Florida, and the other is Pensacola Naval Air Station. The base offers a wide variety of services to the community, including active duty military members and their families, retirees, students, and others who need access to air service. In 1951, Fort Walton Beach was chosen as the site for the first USAF installation in Florida. The 55-acre airport was built on what is now NW 3rd Avenue. At that time it was just an auxiliary airstrip used by fighter pilots from nearby Eglin AFB. Since then, Ft Walton Beach has grown into one of the most important USAF installations in Southeast Asia and Europe. Today it houses more than 60 personnel responsible for providing aerial refueling, intelligence gathering and security for nuclear weapons sites around the world. In addition to its air force functions, Ft Walton Beach also houses a civilian airport named after Air Force Brigadier General James Hogg which provides passenger service to local businesses and tourists alike.

Fort Walton Beach is a small town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,247 at the 2010 census. Fort Walton Beach is bordered to the north by Indian River Lagoon and to the east by Gulf Shores. The first European settlers in Fort Walton Beach were Spanish soldiers who landed on what is now known as Santa Rosa Island on February 3, 1541. They named their settlement San Agustín de las Palmas because of Saint Augustine's landing there on October 14 of that year. In 1836, Seminole Indians attacked and burned down the white courthouse in nearby Stonington while Judge James Kenedy was presiding over a court case. A detachment of U.S. Marines built a fortification around 1837 called "Ft. Walton" after General Andrew Jackson's brother-in-law William Worth (the future President) donated land for it within present day Fort Walton Beach Township limits. The fortifications were abandoned in 1843 when Jacksonville became an American city and Fort Walton Beach became part of it. A post office was established at Ft. Walton Beach in 1850, but no mail reached it until 1861 due to lack of transportation across the Strait of Florida from Pensacola Bay to Stonington Landing on Santa Rosa Island where packets sailed for Havana carrying goods back and forth between Havana and Pensacola Bay via Marco Polo Bridge during the Cuban Revolution effort sponsored by Spain against revolutionary Cuba In 1865, military authorities decided that regular mail service couldn't be maintained because large shipments of salt water exports had been stopped coming into port at Stonington Landing owing to coastal erosion caused by hurricanes since 1851; so an extra depot was built about two miles north of present day Ft Walton beach near Cedar Key which served as both main post office building as well as a warehouse for packages arriving from Havana . In 1971, USPS discontinued all domestic airmail operations due to budget cuts but continued providing express services through its Miami hub until May 2001 when UPS acquired those services . After experiencing several major hurricanes including Irma in September 2016 which destroyed most buildings along US 1 & I-4 corridor nears FtWV beach - Federal Emergency Management Agency declared state of emergency & activated National Guard troops Fort Walton Beach experienced significant flooding during Hurricane Irma on September 16th 2017: https://www2a2a2a2a2130e0d20f005000005fd5dd5/... The name "Fort Walton Beach" comes from Spanish Conquistador Hernando de Soto's landing here on October 14th 1541 looking for new land west of Tampa Bay; he found only dry ground inland after disembarking his expedition with 30miles westward along what would become US Highway 1 today It took another 100 years before Spanish settlers began farming here permanently – beginning with Isidore Fernandez y Funes’ grantee “Los Indios” group who arrived here in 1795 The area we now call "Fort Walton" started being developed as early as 1800 when Captain John Smith visited this part of Hillsborough County looking for fresh water resources ; he located three springs here which may have been why he called this place Vero Riviera or 'Island Harbor'. On December 12th 1800 Colonel James Purdy used Lieutenant John Dickson’sboat “Dolphin”to transport supplies from Mobile Bay upriver past Apalachicola Sound onto mainland Alabama where they were unloaded at Muscle Shoals Power Plant before continuing northeast upriver past eastern Lake Okeechobee into Georgia This same vessel also transported Incorporated Company directors Daniel Webster & Orlando Bloom off shore towards Daytona beach while they attended Congressionaltown meeting on January 6th 1802 aboard USS Constitution under command Captains Samuel Barron & Edward Preble Some time later Commodore John Waddell granted Sanchez Levasseur exclusive right to navigate channel between Mobile Bay and PensacolaBay using river current rather than open ocean currents required by French traders whom they had offended ] So we can thank George Washington Jones (1776-1845)for finally opening up our coast road! less

In 1901, Fort Walton Beach became part of the newly created state of Florida and was designated as its capital city. The city continued to grow rapidly until World War II when it lost its importance due to Hurricane Gilbert which destroyed much of the townscape and killed more than 100 people. After World War II, Fort Walton Beach experienced a period of rapid growth with many new businesses opening up including several hospitals, schools, churches, nightclubs, and other recreational facilities along with significant development in both artisanship and engineering industries such as shipbuilding. In recent years however, Fort Walton Beach has faced increasing challenges such as being host to numerous homeless residents due to high rates of crime in adjacent Miami-Dade County while also experiencing acoustic issues from nearby annual concerts by artists like Metallica that have impacted tourism significantly
